FRIDE Researcher, Middle East and North Africa


FRIDE’s Middle East and North Africa (MENA) team is looking for a qualified junior or mid-level researcher to complement the team in the following areas:

Developing an independent research line on Middle Eastern affairs and EU-MENA relations, preferably focusing on Mashreq, Gulf, and/or regional geopolitics.
Management of research projects, including relations to donors, reporting, keeping deadlines, planning events, administration, coordination among project partners, etc.
Fundraising, including proposal-writing, networking, research.
Editing and peer-review of research articles and web content.
Organisation of conferences and seminars.
Responding to media interview requests and writing OpEds.
Frequent travel across Europe and the Arab world for conferences and field work.
Requirements:

Native Arabic and excellent English, spoken and written. Working knowledge of Spanish is an asset.
Proven expertise in Middle Eastern affairs (especially Levant / Gulf) and solid knowledge of EU foreign policy.
Outstanding analytical capacities at both macro (geopolitics) and micro (local development) levels of analysis.
Excellent public speaking, presentation and media skills.
Strong individual outreach capacities, including via social networks.
Dynamic, pro-active personality, ability to take initiatives and to manage a project independently and with full responsibility.
Common sense and disposition to contribute to a good team spirit in a multinational team.
MA or PhD in political science, international law, economics or another relevant field.
Conditions:

Position based in Madrid, Spain.
Initial contract for 1 year, starting in 2013 at the candidates’ earliest availability, with possibility of extension.

Remuneration commensurate with experience.

Candidates must have a valid work / residence permit for the Schengen space.
