Global Program Head - Neuroscience , Basel, Switzerland or East Hanover, New Jersey


The Global Program Head has final accountability for the innovation, strategy, operations, and related development deliverables for a large project or portfolio of projects within a designated disease/clinical area. The predominant function of the role is to lead a team of senior functional experts focused on securing global regulatory approval, market access and optimized commercial value of the program/portfolio while ensuring this is achieved with a high quality, within budget and in a competitive and timely manner, utilizing both the internal or other identified expert resources necessary for success. Beyond his or her in-project responsibilities, the Global Program Head is required to provide a strong and consistent support to the Franchise Leadership Team, to participate in critical development-wide management initiatives designed to shape the structure and processes of the organization.
Major Accountabilities
• Establish short and long range project/portfolio vision and strategy
• Leverage knowledge, experience, understanding of external stakeholders, internal team capabilities and portfolio needs to develop a compelling, innovative vision for program/portfolio
• Anticipate internal and external drivers of changes to strategy, and respond by making well judged and rapid revisions to program/portfolio strategy
• Interact with FLT, IMB and other management boards (i.e PLT) to secure internal stakeholder buy in to vision and strategy
• Develop and maintain a key communication strategy for investor relations and external communications around the program /portfolio
• Drive project operations to achieve superior performance
• Communicate clear strategy to programme team and functions, and ensure that strategy is reflected in the operation
• Set, enforce and measure realistic goals for project operations
• Ensure rigorous adherence to quality and compliance
• Drive talent acquisition among team members and within their sub-teams including active selection and de-selection and performance management of the core membership of the program team
• Actively coach and partner with direct reports to build and implement individual development plans and conduct their performance appraisal discussions in close partnership with the line-function heads
• Proactively shape the external environment to defend and improve Novartis position relevant to the project by developing strong, evidence and trust based relationships with key stakeholders (regulators, KOLs, patient groups, scientific societies)
• Identify and oversee project-related joint ventures, in-licensing agreements, and other business relationships that drive the value of the program/portfolio or reduce the risk of the program
• Contribute to the franchise and wider development organization

Desired Skills & Experience

• Doctoral degree or equivalent, MD preferred 8+ years industry experience 8+ years multi/cross functional leadership experience International and multi-disciplinary drug development project team leadership
• Have an advanced understanding of the drug development process and programs.
• Provide thought-leading insights to the competitive environment and internal partner interfaces.
• Expert knowledge of international customs and business practice.
• Hands on experience with a major submission and regulatory review process.
• Proven people leadership capabilities Expert leadership skills demonstrated in Global Project Teams, in staff management role or in other organisational assignments.
• Expert skills to facilitate/optimise contribution of team members as individuals and members of cohesive team.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for bridging scientific and business participants, for negotiating timelines and for effective international collaboration.
• Outstanding verbal and written communications.
• Therapeutic experience is an advantage Fluent English (oral and written).
