Department

The Music department at BBC Northern Ireland produces a wide range of programmes for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio Ulster, including regular concerts with the Ulster Orchestra, various international chamber music series, speech productions and a weekly classical music programme for local audiences. The department works closely with TV colleagues on programmes such as Proms in the Park.

Role

Your role as Producer, Classical Music, BBC Northern Ireland primarily, though not exclusively, involves making music and speech programmes for Radio 3 and Radio Ulster.    Central to the job is fostering a good relationship with the management and musicians of the Ulster Orchestra.  Securing Programme Commissions, Programme & Concert planning, Artist Liaison, Recording/Delivery of Programmes, Publicity/Promotions, External Relationships with Partners and Representative Bodies, Financial Controls, Responsibility & Accountability and Cultural/Creative Development are all important aspects of this post.    You’ll also develop and make creative content which may be for a radio programme, or for mobile, websites, the iplayer, EPGs and other multiple platforms.   This would also involve finding new ways to connect with audiences and identifying interesting content and formats.   You will also be expected to manage staff and budgets, as well as ensuring programmes and content comply with BBC and external (eg Ofcom) guidance and regulations.
You may be required to work in a flexible manner whether in terms of genres, rotas, location or working environment.

Requirements

You’ll have excellent knowledge of classical music, a demonstrable passion for broadcasting and enthusiasm for radio.    Utilising your subject knowledge to fascinate, entertain and appeal to our audience.    You’ll have an innovative and imaginative approach to programme ideas, sound editorial judgement and a proven ability to originate and develop creative ideas for a diverse audience.   You’ll possess good contacts and the ability to find content from different sources. Ability to write clear and concise material which may be used for briefs, scripts, and digital platform.   Knowledge of techniques of audio and content production you’ll also have an appreciation of how audiences use digital media and platforms. You’ll also have strong technical skills to produce, edit and record broadcast quality content in a range of digital environments, whether self-ops, on location, on desktops or in workshops.    You’ll also need the ability to manage production budgets and resources effectively as well as effective people and performance management skills.  Furthermore, you’ll have demonstrable knowledge of BBC output and that of its competitors.
