EXPERIMENTAL CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS, 

to be filled primarily at Assistant Professor level. Other levels may also be considered for candidates with exceptional qualifications.

Job description

The position will be located at the Department of Applied Physics (http://physics.aalto.fi), which is one of the largest departments at the Aalto University School of Science. The Department pursues vigorous research activities in the field of physical sciences with important industrial applications and technological potential. It was appraised as the highest-ranking unit in the Research Assessment Exercise of 2009 covering all the 46 academic units of Aalto University http://www.aalto.fi/en/research/strengths/aalto_rae_2009_panel_reports.pdf. Much of the research at the Department is focused on condensed-matter and materials physics, on quantum physics and nano-optics, and on advanced energy sciences. The Department also hosts the Nanomicroscopy Centre with its state-of-the-art equipment, and carries out research utilizing also other cutting-edge research infrastructures and facilities located at the Otaniemi Campus, including those in Micronova for micro and nanotechnology and in Cryohall in the O.V. Lounasmaa Laboratory.

Requirements

Throughout their career, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field.

We invite applications for a Tenure Track position in experimental condensed matter physics. We seek for an individual with demonstrated research excellence in the broad areas of soft condensed matter physics, biomimetic materials, photonic or plasmonic materials, or complex materials. The successful candidate is expected to conduct an outstanding independent experimental research program that complements the existing research efforts at the Department of Applied Physics in these fields.

The appointment is expected to be at the Assistant Professor level, although more senior appointments (with or without tenure) will be considered for candidates with exceptional qualifications. • Hold a doctorate in physics or related fields;
• Have potential to carry out research and attract research funding at the highest level;
• Are willing to be effective teachers in the undergraduate and graduate degree programs of the School of Science and the Department of Applied Physics.

 The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research, teaching and academic leadership and activity in scientific community. When recruiting for Assistant Professor level, evaluation is based mainly on scientific merits but also on the applicant’s potential. Therefore, we encourage especially young and promising candidates to apply. However, other Tenure Track levels can be considered for candidates with exceptional qualifications.

Salary

Aalto University follows the salary system of the Finnish universities, but applicants can also provide their own requests. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1600 hours. The position will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus.
