Humidtropics, a CGIAR Research Program (CRP), seeks to transform the lives of the rural poor in tropical Americas, Asia and Africa. Innovative integrated systems research in the humid tropics will help poor farm families, often led by women, boost their agricultural productivity while preserving the land for future generations. ILRI is heavily engaged in the Humidtropics, leading Strategic Research Theme 1 on Systems Analysis and Global Synthesis with strong inputs into other SRT’s. The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Scientist with a broad understanding of mixed-crop livestock systems. He/she will report to the Programme Leader Livestock Systems and Environment and to the Humidtropics contact point. He/she will be responsible for coordinating the Humidtropics Strategic Research Theme 1 on Systems Analysis and Global Synthesis. He/she should have a strong background in impact assessment and M&E, quantitative livelihood assessment methods, survey methods, diverse modelling techniques, participatory methods and policy analysis.
Responsibilities:
  • Providing leadership for the Humidtropics Strategic Research Theme 1 on Systems Analysis and Global Synthesis both in terms of coordination and scientific content;
  • Coordinating the development and writing of research proposals and securing new funds;
  • Coordinating reporting to the Humidtropics on research progress and finances;
  • Contributing to capacity building through training of PhD students and postdocs on systems analysis;
  • Publishing the results of research in high quality peer-reviewed international journals.
Essential Skills and Qualifications will include:
  • PhD in agronomy, livestock science, agro-ecology or environmental sciences;
  • At least 5 years post doctoral experience;
  • Experience in project coordination and grant management;
  • Excellent interpersonal and co-ordination skills;
  • Track record of publishing in high quality peer-reviewed articles;
  • Work experience in developing countries including Africa, Asia or Latin America;
  • Knowledge of French and Spanish will be considered an asset.
Post location: This position is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Position level: Scientist level 2 or 3 dependent on skills and experience.
Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
