The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. Humidtropics, a CGIAR Research Program (CRP), seeks to transform the lives of the rural poor in tropical Americas, Asia and Africa. Innovative integrated systems research in the humid tropics will help poor farm families, often led by women, boost their agricultural productivity while preserving the land for future generations. ILRI is heavily engaged in the Humidtropics, leading Strategic Research Theme 1 on Systems Analysis and Global Synthesis with strong inputs into other SRT’s. The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a scientist with knowledge of mixed-crop livestock systems from the developing world. He/she will be responsible for conducting research for the Humidtropics Strategic Research Theme 1 on Systems Analysis and Global Synthesis.  He/she should have a solid background in impact assessment tools, knowledge to develop and to apply system analysis tools, and to analyse intensification scenarios and assessing environmental impact.

Responsibilities:

• Coordinating the implementation of surveys and experimental work to characterise agricultural systems at different level across action sites;
• Assessing systems performance in terms of productivity, economics and environmental impact;
• Contributing to capacity building through training of PhD students and postdocs on systems analysis;
• Publishing the results of research in high quality peer-reviewed international journals;
• Contributing to the development of new research proposals.

Essential Skills and Qualifications will include:

• PhD in agronomy, livestock science, agro-ecology or environmental sciences;
• At least 2 – 4 years post doctoral experience;
• Knowledge of diverse modelling techniques (dynamic simulation, optimisation, econometrics);
• Knowledge of environmental impact assessment methods;
• Track record of publishing in high quality peer-reviewed articles;
• Work experience in developing countries including Africa, Asia or Latin-America;
• Knowledge of French and Spanish will be considered an asset.

Post location: This position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

Position level: Scientist level 1 (4C).

Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
