Summer 2013 Internship Positions

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a nonprofit dedicated to discovering what works to help the world’s poor. We design and evaluate programs in real contexts with real people, and provide hands-on assistance to bring successful programs to scale. IPA is accepting internsfor the summer of 2013 globally. These positions offer an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research.
 Interns perform a variety of tasks, including:
  • Provide monitoring and oversight for project implementation;
  • Assist with developing and piloting survey questionnaires and other measurement tools;
  • Coordinate field data collection efforts;
  • Conduct administrative data collection;
  • Develop data quality and content quality protocols;
  • Write reports to donors;
  • Coordinate with partner organizations;
  • Assist with data cleaning and analysis;
  • Update and draft policy briefs and memos;
  • Organize conferences;
  • Office administration;
  • Database management; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing: coursework in econometrics and research methods, advanced knowledge of Stata or experience with data management required for research related positions;
  • Strong oral and written communications skills;
  • The candidate should also be a self-starter, resourceful and detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
Additional qualifications for field-based internships:
  • Developing country experience, cultural sensitivity, and demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies; and
  • Strong oral and written communications skills: proficiency in English and depending on the country, proficiency in the local language may be required.

The intern will execute a qualitative evaluation aimed at validating data on the number of children treated for worms. IPA’s Nairobi office is looking to hire one Programme Implementation intern to support the implantation of the National School Based Deworming Programme. The intern will gain experience in implementing a large scale development programme and will play a role in supporting programme coordinators with key elements of the programme including training local officials, preparing for national policy meetings and supporting logistics. The interns will have 1-2 years work experience, and interest in project management. Peru
IPA’s Cusco (Peru) office is looking to hire one Stata intern to work closely with the Project Coordinator on the Targeting the Ultra Poor (TUP) study. The intern will have an important role in one of IPA's larger projects - the implementation budget is approximately $1.5 million and the evaluation budget is approximately $500,000. She/He will participate of the preparation and implementation of the midline data collection, more concretely will be in charge of the design and implementation of a system of supervision of data quality to guarantee that data collected complies with IPA standards. The intern may also assist with implementation monitoring activities in the field. Peru
IPA Peru is looking for an intern to support a follow-up study and a qualitative evaluation of an early education program in rural areas of the country. The intern should be fluent in Spanish and able to work independently, and would preferably have experience in qualitative research methods. Ideally, interns would start in May and would be available to stay on as work opportunities may arise.
