Junior Researcher: Food Science

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and fosters innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic,
laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical
evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services, as well as various
surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms,
the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the
entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Institute for Fruit, Vine and Wine (ARC-Infruitec/Nietvoorbij)
seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions:

Junior Researcher:
Food Science (2-year fixed-term contract)

Key performance areas:ʉۢ Perform appropriate research and technology transfer in agro-processing
• Develop safe agro-processing strategies suitable for application in rural areas • Write/submit project proposals
• Compile internal/external progress reports • Disseminate results/technology transfer • Compile and manage
project budgets • Collaborate with other ARC institutes on agro-processing • Manage maintenance of agroprocessing
equipment.

Requirements: â€¢ An MSc in Food Science • Knowledge of/experience in food processing operations and
preservation techniques and exposure to agro-processing operations • Knowledge of Food Microbiology and
its application in preservation strategies • Good communication skills (written and verbal) • General experience
within a research environment • Willingness to work in rural communities • A valid Code EB driver’s licence
• The ability to speak and understand an African language will be an advantage as this person will be required
in the rural areas most of the time.

A competitive remuneration package will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities and the stature of the
position. Appointments will be subject to a 6-month probation period (for permanent positions only) and a
positive security clearance.
