Refugee Policy Intern

Position Summary:
HIAS seeks a Refugee Policy Intern to assist the Advocacy team with efforts to increase support among legislators for HIAS’ work and create an environment for a strong refugee resettlement program, robust international refugee assistance, and fair and humane asylum policies.
The position is unpaid but may be pursued for academic credit. A semester or quarter commitment is required.
Essential Functions:
• Conducts research, analysis, and writing to promote legislative and administrative reform to improve the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in the U.S., and in support of HIAS’ U.S. and international programs.
• Assists with preparing regular publications as needed.
• Monitors and reports on congressional hearings, legislative affairs, and media coverage.
• Performs other duties related to program development, management, operations, grassroots outreach and database upkeep.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Pursuing an undergraduate degree.
• Excellent research, analytical and writing skills.
• Strong interest in advocacy.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Experience working with refugees, immigration and/or policy strongly desired.
• Ability to prioritize, multi-task between administrative and programmatic issues, and manage time effectively.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently, and strong organizational skills.
