Internship in the Transparency International Legal Affairs Unit

The TI Secretariat in Berlin is seeking a highly motivated intern for its Legal Affairs Unit (LAU).

Transparency International (TI) is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption. Through more than 90 chapters worldwide and an international secretariat in Berlin, Germany, TI raises awareness of the damaging effects of corruption and works with partners in government, business and civil society to develop and implement effective measures to tackle it.

The function of Legal Counsel (Head of Unit) was established in September 2011 with the aim of strengthening TI-S and movement’s legal capacity for managing reputational and legal risks. The Legal Counsel provides legal advice to TI-S management and staff, as well as to TI National Chapters worldwide. The Legal Affairs Unit works with international networks of pro bono lawyers and law firms. It develops and implements policies, procedures, legal tools, and training programmes to strengthen TI’s legal infrastructure.

Main function: Support to the small team of the Legal Affairs Unit

Starting date: 9 January 2012

Duration: 6 months

Remuneration: EUR 400

Location: Berlin, Germany

Key responsibilities:

  • Support with providing legal assistance to TI staff and the movement;
  • Assisting in developing of a web-based Legal Helpdesk;
  • Assisting in developing of a case management database;
  • Drafting of the Unit’s plans, reports, presentations, and other documents;
  • Carrying out research on variety of legal issues;
  • General administrative and logistical support.

Knowledge, experience, interests and skills

  • A recent graduate in law, knowledge of common law an asset;
  • Strong interest in international legal affairs and anti-corruption;
  • Prior experience with national or international NGOs an asset;
  • Fluent written and spoken English, very good German an asset;
  • Good internet skills and experience with databases;
  • Strong research capacities
  • Experience and excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word. Other Microsoft Office applications an asset;
  • Very good people skills, dedication, flexibility, and the ability to contribute fully to the workings of the unit and the secretariat
  • Prior office experience is an asset
