Principal/Senior Natural Resources Economist (Oil & Gas and Mining), southern and eastern Mediterranean

This is a defining point in the history of the southern and eastern Mediterranean (SEMED). It’s also a pivotal time for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). We’re expanding into the region, ensuring the stable economic growth demanded by the people who live here. It’s a unique moment – and you can be part of it.

About the role
Already some 50 economists and analysts in the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) contribute to the operational, policy and strategy work of the Bank. You’ll strengthen the OCE’s project and sector appraisal and project monitoring capacity. It’ll be your responsibility to design, appraise and monitor the high-profile oil & gas and mining projects that will impact the region’s transition. That means working closely with our teams in Natural Resources banking, Environmental and Social Policy, and Communications as you help develop and drive forward policies and strategies for the extractive industries sector. In particular, you’ll be looking at resources management and transparency, licensing and regulatory issues, sector restructuring and the commercialisation of energy companies.

About you
You’re likely to have a PhD in the field of energy economics on top of a relevant postgraduate degree. And you’ll certainly have strong experience of, or a research background in, energy sector policies and regulated industries. We’ll also be looking for proven analytical and quantitative skills, the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and a flair for multi-tasking. Culturally sensitive and highly organised with an excellent command of English, you’ll ideally be familiar with the countries of the southern and eastern Mediterranean, and speak one or more of the region’s languages

About us
Owned by 61 countries, the European Union and the European Investment Bank, the EBRD supports projects whose funding needs cannot be fully met by the market. We have operations in 29 countries from Central Europe to Central Asia and we are currently expanding into the southern and eastern Mediterranean. Our work covers a huge variety of sectors and projects. And while each one of them is unique in the challenges it presents, all share the common goals of encouraging private investment and promoting secure and stable market economies.
