Organizational setting and reporting relationships:

This position is located in the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Director of the Institute. He/she will work in close consultation with UNICRI staff in Turin Headquarters and Rome Liaison Office.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Senior Research Fellow will be responsible for the following duties:

• Conduct research in the field of crime, justice and security to be published by UNICRI, particularly focusing on the intersection between law enforcement and public health;

• Provide policy guidance on matters related to the intersection between security and health;

• Contribute to ongoing UNICRI projects, particularly advice and participate in the implementation of the project Technical Assistance to the Implementation of the Regional Plan on Drugs of the Calabria Region;

• Contribute to the UNICRI work on crime prevention, criminal justice system and security, particularly provide high-level technical and advisory input on the research agenda, project development, training and other related matters;

• Develop new project proposals in the field of security and health and contribute to identifying new sources of funding;

• Undertake any other activities related to the implementation of the UNICRI Work Programme.


Work implies frequent interaction with the following:

• Staff of other units and sections within UNICRI;

• Counterparts, officers and technical staff of governmental agencies, local authorities, other UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, academia, and other areas of civil society.


Results Expected:

Produces research on the intersection between law enforcement and public health to be published by UNICRI; Assists in positioning UNICRI in the field of law enforcement and public health in the international community; Participates in the strengthening of the UNICRI research agenda, project portfolio and training programme; Provides advice on and participates in the implementation of ongoing UNICRI projects resulting in high quality outputs; Develops new project proposals; Identifies new resources for UNICRI activities.

Qualifications:

• Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Social Sciences, Criminology, Law, Political Science, Public Health or other relevant field.

• Experience: A minimum of ten years of professional experience in analytical work at the national or international level, with a particular focus on topics relevant to the functions of the post is required. Experience in research, including at the international level and on crime, criminal justice system, security or drug prevention, resulting in the production of reports/publications is highly desirable.

• Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency, with ability to draft clearly and concisely, is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an asset.
