Senior Scientific Manager - Developmental Biology Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

Ref 81051

Salary: £36,672 to £48,459 dependent on experience

Closing Date: 31st December 2011

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, based south of Cambridge, is one of the world's leading genomic research centres funded primarily by the Wellcome Trust. Our mission is to use genome sequences to advance understanding of the biology of humans and pathogens in order to improve human health.

With the completion of the human and mouse genome sequences, attention is now turning to the functional analysis of genes in mammals. The Mouse Genetics Project (MGP), a flagship project of the Sanger Institute, aims to generate more than 1000 mutant strains over the next 5 years and characterize them through a broad primary screen followed by detailed secondary phenotyping of selected mutants of interest. The mutant strains and the primary phenotypic data we produce are openly available to the scientific community. This project forms an essential component of a larger effort at the Institute to identify genes that are critical for normal mammalian development and to generate animal models of human disease.

We are looking for an exceptional individual with a strong scientific background and management capabilities to lead the Developmental Biology area, a major component of MGP phenotyping.

This newly created role will be responsible for managing the team and accountable for planning throughput and delivering the required phenotyping data to the research community. The postholder will also play a critical role in ensuring that potential scientific outputs of the MGP can be realised by working with Sanger faculty and external collaborators to drive and support high quality scientific publications using phenotyping data.

Essential Skills
The postholder will be required to have specialist scientific knowledge and experience at PhD level in Mouse Genetics (or in an area of interest to the MGP including but not limited to immunology, haematology, infection, developmental biology, metabolic sciences, in life phenotyping) or equivalent extensive experience. He/she will also require:

  • Significant postdoctoral level research experience using the mouse as a model organism
  • Evidence of the ability to successfully implement and manage complex plans for scientific programmes
  • Strong record of accomplishment managing technical/professional groups
  • Proven success working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build good working relationships and team spirit
  • Strong computing use skills
  • Proven ability to successfully manage collaborative projects
  • Proven track record of leading publications and presentation of outcomes of work in prestigious conferences

Ideal Skills
Experience of working on mouse mutant programmes and a background of managing people in a high throughput environment are desirable.
