Salary range from £62,000 per annum dependent on experience

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

The Sanger Institute conducts research for human healthcare benefits using large-scale sequencing, informatics and analysis of genetic variation to further our understanding of gene function in health and disease and to generate resources of lasting value to biomedical research.

The duel perspective of this role requires the successful candidate to achieve a balance between their responsibilities in supporting the Director of Corporate Services in his campus wide role, managing and delivering high profile projects as required, and the provision of leadership in areas of corporate policy, science regulation, legal advice and grants administration for the Institute. To deliver on each aspect of this role the successful candidate will be expected to actively engage with senior management and key stakeholders within the Institute, across campus, and with our parent organisation, the Wellcome Trust.

You will provide leadership, influence and make recommendations to the Board of Management, Faculty and senior management on policy, strategic planning exercises and legal aspects of the Institute's scientific activities. To achieve this objective you will have access to a range of professional staff and it will be your responsibility to lead this team to provide a high quality comprehensive scientific administration service to the Institute.

Providing expertise and leadership in managing projects is the other important element of this role. The Director of Corporate Services has a campus wide remit and you will be expected to work closely with the Director to achieve the vision for the Campus. This will involve managing complex relationships, ensuring the Director is made aware of any developing issues, providing innovative ideas and solutions and driving implementation through influence and negotiation.

Essential Skills
This role will suit an exceptional candidate who is a consummate communicator, politically astute and thrives on the challenge of developing and maintaining complex relationships with a broad range of stakeholders. Essentially your career will have been within the scientific world, ideally within a scientific research organisation, pharmaceutical industry, university or one of the other large research organisations such as the MRC. To achieve credibility you will be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the scientific environment and the challenges faced in this competitive arena by the scientists and those supporting the delivery of the science.

As the key adviser to the Institute on legal aspects of the regulatory framework governing the science, grants administrations and corporate governance you will be able to demonstrate an understanding of each of these areas and the development of supporting policies.

You will be able to demonstrate that you have successfully delivered high profile projects through the initiation, planning and implementation phases. It is important that you have experience of managing organisational change and understand the complexities of dealing with the people and cultural issues that change brings.

You will have excellent influencing and negotiating skills.
