Senior Associate Scientist - Agricultural Economics

Reporting to the Program 5 Leader, the position plays a key role in the development of global rice supply-demand model describing the behavior of the world rice market and its linkage with other agricultural and nonagricultural inputs and products. This position is a critical part of the local management team that will ensure that IRRI serves as an information gateway for the global rice market and policy.

Major accountabilities/Responsibilities
• Plan and undertake analyses on rice production, consumption and trade policy issues from data collected from various sources
• Provide regular updates on global rice area, production, consumption, trade and prices
• Provide medium-term baseline projections on global rice supply, demand and prices to assist government agencies, agribusiness and others in their medium-term planning.
• Establish and maintain linkages with local and foreign partners and institutions to create awareness to facilitate the use of results of science and development of agroforestry to users, including policy makers.
• Prepare technical and briefing reports on the impacts of various domestic and trade policies as they arise to IRRI Senior Management, media and policy makers that will lead to informed decision making by policy makers.
• Provide leadership in training and technical backstopping of NARS
• Synthesize, present to international conferences and workshop, and submit publication of research results in international-refereed scientific journals and scientific forums
• Perform other job-related duties as may be assigned by IRS and Division Head from time to time

Qualification requirements
• Post graduate degree or equivalent in Ag Econ, Econ or Statistics
• More than 5 years of experience in applied socioeconomics research with background in crop modeling and crop loss assessment
• Experience with data collection, analysis, and management and with economic modeling methods and applied econometric techniques
• Proficiency in the use of econometric and/or statistical analysis
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
