Supply Chain Accountant

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a Research and Development Institution of excellence in South Africa, which operates within the National System of Innovation. The ARC has a mandate for innovative and creative agricultural research, technology development and transfer aimed at the advancement of South African agriculture. Its operations are overseen by the ARC Council appointed by and accountable to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The ARC-Roodeplaat (Vegetable and Ornamental Plant Institute) seeks to appoint a highly motivated, innovative, visionary, strategic and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat:


Supply Chain Accountant
The incumbent will report to the Financial Manager.

Key performance areas: • Manage the procurement function (goods and services) • Liaise with suppliers • Obtain quotations/tenders • Develop proposals • Regulate contracts and contract administration according to procurement policies • Address balanced scorecard issues regarding savings, cost increase management and BEE spending • Act in direct support of the research function • Source and evaluate suppliers • Manage the Institute’s supplier database • Ensure internal control compliance • Serve on the local bid committees and represent the Institute at corporate tender committee level • Manage the inventory function • Ensure that risks related to procurement and inventory management are adequately addressed • Provide general support, eg inputs for budget preparation.


Requirements: • 3-year supply chain-related diploma/degree • Experience in supply chain management and sound knowledge of procurement administration in an agricultural environment • Excellent computer skills, particularly in MS Excel and purchasing software (ARCFIN/Progress experience would be advantageous) • Ability to communicate at all levels • Effective planning, organising and monitoring skills • Knowledge of the PFMA and related Treasury Regulations and their application to the ARC • Exposure to public sector procurement practices and principles • Valid driver’s licence.

Competitive remuneration packages will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities and stature of the positions. The appointments will be subject to a 6-month probation period.
