Job Description

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a Research and Development Institution of excellence in South Africa, which operates within the National System of Innovation. The ARC has a mandate for innovative and creative agricultural research, technology development and transfer aimed at the advancement of South African agriculture. Its operations are overseen by the ARC Council appointed by and accountable to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (ARC-OVI) seeks to appoint a highly motivated, innovative, visionary, strategic and dynamic person to the following position in Pretoria:


Junior Researcher: Cellular Immunology

Key performance areas: • Participate as a member of a research team involved in the development of new vaccines against diseases of economic importance • Plan and execute research projects and critically analyse the resulting data • Publish research outputs in peer-reviewed journals, semi-scientific publications and research reports • Present results and papers in oral form to a variety of audiences • Collaborate with colleagues.


Requirements: • MSc (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related field) • Experience in or knowledge of molecular biology techniques (cloning, DNA sequencing and analysis); protein biochemistry techniques (recombinant protein expression and purification); and cellular immunology techniques (sterile cell culture techniques, lymphocyte proliferation assay, ELISPOT, quantitative real-time PCR, flow cytometry for lymphocyte subpopulation phenotyping, proliferation and cytotoxic analysis, lymphocyte magnetic antibody cell sorting). Biodegradable microsphere technology would be advantageous
• Computer literacy • Ability to initiate, organise, prioritise and work accurately and systematically; to work independently and within a research team; to communicate and interact with colleagues; and to write research reports.

Competitive remuneration packages will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities and stature of the positions. The appointments will be subject to a 6-month probation period.
