LAC Project Coordinator

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking an accomplished Project Coordinator with demonstrated managerial and project management experience to assist in the implementation of CIP programs in the LAC region.

The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international agricultural research-for-development organization with a focus on potato, sweetpotato, and Andean roots and tubers. Its vision is of roots and tubers improving the lives of the poor. CIP is dedicated to achieving food security, improved well-being, and gender equity for poor people in root and tuber farming and food systems of the developing world. CIP works with partners to contribute high quality science, technology, and capacity strengthening for sustainable science-based solutions. CIP is headquartered in Lima, Peru, with staff and activities in over 30 locations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. CIP is a member of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research, a network of 15 research centers mostly located in the developing world and supported by more than 50 donor members.

The Position: This position will be based in Quito, Ecuador and report directly to the Regional Operation Leader for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The Project Coordinator will assist in implementing CIP’s organizational mission through efficient and effective project management in the LAC region and assuring compliance, monitoring and reporting as well as Knowledge Management. S/he will also contribute to research associated with CIP programs in the LAC region and will ensure the appropriate links between bilateral projects, CIP Global Programs and CRPs, S/he will also contribute to interaction with projects in other CIP regions as appropriate.

Duties and Accountabilities:

Project Management (40%):

  • Coordinate the project management and implementation of MS. Project with project PIs and Regional Operation Leader.
  • Project Management backstopping to assist with the implementation of project deliverables
  • Assist in the preparation of annual work plan and annual budget and financial forecast to help to explain variances.
  • Review Project Status Reports and invoices from project partners to assist in financial oversight in collaboration with LAC administrative and finance officer
  • Coordinate and/or complete the submission of Quarterly Financial Forecasting Reports, Annual Technical Reports, and annual financial reports in collaboration with LAC administrative and finance officer.
  • Review of Monthly Financial Reports to coordinate with Project Management and Home Office Accounting Team in collaboration with LAC administrative and finance officer.
  • Ensure project performance technical reports are completed on time in coordination with PI and Grants & Contracts for dispatching to donor representatives
  • Coordinate with Monitoring and Evaluation Team and Project Management the Performance and Evaluation Plan per donor requirements.
  • Coordinate with Project Leaders and communications department to communicate relevant project information throughout the Program

New Business Development- NDB (15%)

  • Contribute to new business development process in conjunction with regional representatives, and Proposal Development Team.

Research (45%)

  • Conduct and support research on CIP projects in LAC (collaborate with other regions and global programs when appropriate) in areas related to food security, risk assessment, impact evaluations, gender equity and inclusion, value chain upgrading and market development
  • Regional EU project ISSANDES: measuring indicators for gender, food security; market analysis and innovations related to CSR/value-added opportunities
  • Coordinate primarily with Global Social and Health Sciences division
  • Conduct and support research on CRP projects in LAC (collaborate with other regions and global programs when appropriate):
    • CRP 2 Activity 3 Value Chain Upgrading
    • CRP-RTB: market development and best practice guidelines related to potato
  • Contribute to planning, reporting of research project and collaborate in publications
  • Participate in the Global and Regional programs strategic planning activities and coordination with CRPs.

Selection Criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Development Studies, Business Administration or other relevant discipline
  • Combination of relevant education and experience to total 5 years
  • Demonstrated leadership, ethics and sound judgment, both independently and as part of a team;
  • Must be able to research information and analyze data to arrive at valid conclusions, make recommendations effectively, and execute plans of action within a team dynamic.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to international locations if needed (20-30%) and adjust to cultural differences
  • Staff supervisory and training experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with staff members.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience and knowledge of the multinational donor community and the rules and regulations that is required to operate.
  • Foreign language proficiency (English, French, Spanish preferred. Other languages valued)
  • Overseas experience
  • Experience working for International Non-Government Organizations or Non-Profits.

Conditions: Employment contract will be for a two-year term (with a three month probation period) with possibility of renewal. CIP prides itself on its collegial and supportive working environment, which allows space for personal and professional growth.
