The Organisation

SEA Europe (Ships and Maritime Equipment Association of Europe) represents the full supply chain of the maritime engineering and manufacturing industries. It comprises 22 National Associations in 18 different European countries. The Sector has an annual turnover of approximately 80bn € per annum and employs over 500.000 people. It is a high-tech sector with a long tradition and global reach. SEA Europe has played a pioneering role in several EU policy fields in past set-up and plays an important part in regulatory affairs at international level.

Job Description

The Secretary General of SEA Europe leads the Secretariat with currently seven staff members. He or she has overall responsibility for the operation of the Secretariat, coordinating a range of working groups and reporting to the Chairman and the Board. The main functions include management, representation and strategy building & implementation.

1. Management:

The Secretary General shall:

  • Maintain excellent relations and strategic coherence within the team and with the National Member Associations, as well as partner organisations and with the EU and Member States’ officials;
  • Report regularly to the Chairman and the Board of SEA Europe;
  • Ensure the smooth running of the Association in Brussels;
  • Administer the budget and other financial matters.

2. Representation & lobbying

The Secretary General represents the sector on a daily basis towards policy institutions, industry organisations and the wider public including media relations. Therefore, the successful candidate is a reliable communicator and networker.

3. Strategy:

The Secretary General shall work with all member associations and the SEA Europe team to develop maintain and implement a targeted strategy to the benefit of the enterprises active in the sector within Europe. This will include:

  • Developing proposals for new political strategies;
  • Identifying and monitoring opportunities for influencing specific policies;
  • Expanding SEA Europe’s profile within the EU & International context;
  • Supporting and coordination the Associations work on EU lobbying.

4. Experience and skills:

  • Experience and Knowledge;
  • Working experience as an executive in a manufacturing enterprise, ideally with a maritime background or similar;
  • Knowledge of global business;
  • Competent to deal with EU, multinational and international institutions;
  • Capable to represent the Association as a speaker at international events;
  • Previous media experience.

Skills

  • Excellent communication, networking and interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge of international work environments and intercultural communication;
  • Excellent strategic, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Strong political awareness and ability to be pragmatic and diplomatic with a range of actors from CEOs to EU policy officers;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Strong writing skills – able to explain complex matters briefly;
  • Comfortable in leading a small team.
