TECHNOLOGY DIVISION, HEAD OF GSAM ASIA PACIFIC PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY , EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - SINGAPORE

Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) Technology is directly aligned to the business, working on a variety of software engineering problems that range in duration from hours to years. It is a fast-paced environment, adapting to market and customer needs to create software that is robust enough to cater to an ever-changing business environment. GSAM Technology utilizes an array of different technologies with increasing development focus on open source and Linux-based technologies. 

Within the Asia Pacific region, GSAM Technology has teams in Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing and Bangalore. The teams work closely together to serve business users all over Asia (Japan, Hong Kong, China, Australia, Korea, India, and Singapore) and in some cases other regions (New York/London). 

The GSAM Asia Pacific Portfolio Management Technology team is part of GSAM Asia Pacific Technology and supports the front-office business users of the firm across several different areas: GSAM Fixed Income (FI), Fundamental Equities (FE), Quantitative Investment Strategies (QIS), and the Goldman Sachs Investment Partners (GSIP) hedge fund.  This technology team is responsible for designing, developing, enhancing and maintaining the tools and systems used by their business to construct portfolios, execute orders and manage risk. 

The candidate would report to the head of GSAM Asia Pacific Technology who is based in Japan.   

RESPONSIBILITIES 

The role requires an experienced senior developer base managing a team of  developers across the Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong offices.  Day-to-day responsibilities will include: 

• Maintenance and support of existing production systems 
• Oversight/management for all projects that impact the portfolio management businesses in the region 
• Regular engagement with the business to understand their needs/concerns and develop their plans 
• Interaction with global technology teams on projects and support 
• Career management of the entire GSAM Asia Pacific Portfolio Management Technology team. 
• Working closely with their counterpart who runs the GSAM Asia Pacific Federation Technology team looking after the middle and back office technology functions 

Additionally the candidate will be expected to: 
• Help define strategic technical direction for the region 
• Develop and maintain familiarity with regional regulatory and market nuances and how they affect the portfolio management business 
• Help drive project prioritization and resourcing across multiple business units and multiple countries within the region 
• Participate with other GS technology divisions (e.g. Federation, Securities) on cross-divisional projects/initiatives in the region 

The systems developed and supported by the group cover portfolio management, P&L, risk, reporting and order management/execution tools.  These systems are developed and deployed both globally and regionally and are built using a number of technologies: Java, C#, SecDb/Slang (GS' proprietary database and scripting language), other scripting languages, Sybase, Tomcat, Tibco EMS/RV. 

DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS 

The role involves working closely with traders, portfolio mangers, and the business COOs (Chief Operating Officers) presenting an opportunity to learn about front office and trading businesses and to become familiar with a variety of products traded by the desks.  The role will also provide: 
• Regular interaction with senior business and technology representatives both in GSAM and also other divisions in the region. 
• Exposure to a broad range of portfolio management and market practices, and technology systems. 
• Opportunities to work closely with other GS divisional IT teams such as Federation and Securities on regional projects. 
• Full involvement in the challenging process of prioritizing and resourcing projects across multiple regions and multiple business areas.

Basic Qualifications

MANDATORY 
• University degree or equivalent 
• Minimum 9 years experience in business facing IT role 
• High motivation and desire to work in a technical and managerial role closely aligned with front-office trading desks 
• Strong analytical skills 
• Strong teamwork skills along with experience in managing people and career development 
• Strong communication and client-facing skills 
• Strong desire to learn the business 
• Personal organization and task management 
• Attention to detail 
• A technical background with experience of OOO programming and relational databases is essential 
• Candidates should have financial industry experience; asset management experience is highly preferred

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with Linux/Solaris operating platform 
• Fluency in Japanese, Mandarin or Korean is a plus
