Developmental Specialist/Social Worker , Eagle River, Alaska


Position Summary
Provides in-home intervention and support for families with a child under the age of 36 months who experiences developmental delay or disability.
Essential Functions
Related to working with families:
  • Form respectful partnerships with families in planning and implementing programming for their child.
  • Screen and assess general developmental performance in the areas of gross motor, fine motor, behavior, cognition, speech/language, self-help, and adaptive behaviors.
  • Assists with the development of an Individual Family Service Plan based on developmental assessment, parent input, and/or consultations with support service personnel.
  • Observes and assists families if requested in identification of resources, concerns and priorities in relation to needs of their child and family.
  • Assists parents with the home strategies and intervention techniques which best facilitate the child's function within the family environment.
  • Act as family service coordinator (case management) using a respectful partnership model of family-centered services.
  • Assist, coordinate, and collaborate information for families regarding community agencies and/or community transition services.
  • Keep current and accurate records to document activity with the family and to meet state audit requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all clients.
  • Assist families through the billing process.
Related to the Agency:
  • Participate in scheduled team meetings to coordinate and improve services.
  • Develop a schedule of services and work related activities to provide a maximum amount of services to families.
  • Form respectful partnerships with co-workers.
  • Collaborate and coordinate information with community agencies and support services with families.
  • Provide in-service (both formally and informally) to community agencies parents and other interested parties to further understanding of the Infant Learning Program and the benefits of early intervention.
  • Participate in ongoing staff development and education.
  • Participate as an advocate for Infant Learning Programming within community awareness projects.
  • Submit monthly required data including time cards and expenses according to agency schedules.
  • Be willing to participate in any other projects as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Keep children's files current and updated at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to connect with families and follow their needs.
  • Skilled in MS Office Outlook (email and calendar) and Word.
  • Able to work independently and problem solve.
  • Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Knowledgeable, skilled and able to deal with situational & behavioral challenges with children, care givers and families.
  • Knowledgeable of various disabilities, impairments and special needs in children and skilled in educating to those with special needs.
  • Able to write legibly and type simple and professional correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Meet current State of Alaska requirement for a licensed social worker
  • A valid Alaska Drivers License.
  • Must have reliable transportation and automobile insurance (minimum of liability insurance), and be willing to use own vehicle for job duties, including home visits.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A minimum of one year working with children ages 0-3 years.
  • A minimum of one year working closely with parents in forming partnerships to provide services.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the Early Interventionist will be required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; communicate with listening and speaking, and frequently sit on the floor. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, with intermittent and/or occasional high levels. He/she is required to walk, climb stairs and may be required to lift and/or move items weighing up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. Extended periods of sitting are required. Travel to and from the employer's office and families' homes, is required. He/she may be required to work beyond the standard scheduled shift, and may be required to work occasional evenings and/or weekends and must regularly interact with co-workers and the public.
