Electrical Engineer/Technician at TerraTherm, Inc.
I. Position Summary:
This position reports to the Electrical Engineering Lead and is responsible for electrical design, implementation and related activities. The position requires an individual with strong knowledge of electrical power, electrical system design and electrical systems installation and operations knowledge, including direct hands-on experience. Familiarity with SCRs for heater control and VFDs for motor control is preferred. Knowledge and experience with instrumentation and control would be helpful.
II. Primary Skills and Responsibilities:
1. Develop 480V, 1 – 20MVA, power distribution solutions for temporary electrical needs at project sites. This includes the development of electrical one-line drawings, sizing of transformers, sizing of electrical panels, performing load calculations, performing voltage drop calculations, performing short circuit calculations and performing protective device coordination.
2. Perform Arc Flash Analysis and support the company’s electrical safety efforts with special emphasis on NFPA70E.
3. Retrofit existing electrical equipment to meet current project needs through collaboration with the in-house shop team and external contractors as required
4. Assist with developing electrical subcontractor Scopes of Work. Provide construction, installation and startup support for electrical sub-contractors to implement project designs. Be familiar with the requirements of the NEC.
5. Provide support for electrical permitting process.
6. Demonstrated hands on experience with electro-mechanical equipment installation, operation and troubleshooting. Ability to work with electrical meters, and diagnostic tools.
III. Additional Preferred Skills:
1. Be familiar with the application of SCR technology such as VFDs for motors and Zero-Crossing SCRs. Provide support to field teams with troubleshooting efforts as required.
2. Familiarity with ladder logic; Able to design and implement simple circuits such as emergency stop devices. Provide support for process controls / instrumentation as required.
IV. Qualifications:
1. Experience Required:
• At least 3 years direct engineering experience or 5 years equivalent experience in electrical design/construction industry or operating/maintaining electrical equipment in plant environment
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel. (AutoCAD and electrical simulation experience preferred, but not required)
2. Education/Training:
• BS or higher Electrical Engineering degree, (PE/EIT preferred for Engineer)
- OR –
• Licensed electrician, Master Electrician license preferred for electrician
- OR –
• Military or other advanced training & experience in electrical power system design & distribution (Formal certification preferred)
3. Skills/Aptitudes:
• Self-starter, outgoing personality traits, and a team player
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Ability to take direction and act independently
• Be flexible / adaptable to fast-changing field conditions.
• Strong communications and organization skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and stay organized while doing so
• Small / start-up company experience, preferred but not required
The position is based in the Massachusetts office, but some domestic travel, and possibly international travel, will be required. Expect typical project related travel for periods of 1 to 2 weeks and occasionally up to 4 weeks at one time depending on project requirements.
