For our Conservation team located in New Delhi, we are looking for a qualified:

Director – Conservation Policy

WWF India is looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to work closely with the current Director of its Conservation Programme. The position will support the Conservation Director to increase WWF India’s impacts at the policy level and will work closely with a team dedicated and specialised staff at its Secretariat in New Delhi and locations across the country. The incumbent will provide vision, strategic leadership and practical guidance to consolidate and ensure the impact of WWF India’s policy and programme initiatives.

The incumbent will be expected to develop and maintain good working relationships with NGO partners, research and policy institutions and government agencies and take the lead on policy initiatives at a national and state level. Donor liaison, ensuring effective monitoring and reporting as well as representing WWF India at national and international fora will also be responsibilities of this position. Playing an active role in the global WWF network policy programme is also required.

Interested candidates should possess a record of demonstrated leadership at a senior level and collaborative development and delivery of integrated programmes. Knowledge on national and international policies related to forests, climate change, water, protected areas, wildlife, and agriculture would be required, with a specialisation in one or more areas. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, the ability to manage a large and diverse team and strong commitment to WWF’s mission and values are also essential.

India’s rapid economic growth is leading to new and increased conservation challenges at multiple levels. WWF India, the country’s largest conservation organisation seeks to address these challenges through linking field projects with science-based policy and advocacy, campaigning and awareness raising and strengthening local partners and communities. Existing WWF India programmes work at the local, national and global levels in partnership with civil society organisations, government agencies, national and international research and policy institutes, the private sector and the WWF network.

WWF India’s conservation programme addresses both biodiversity conservation and footprint reduction. Major programme areas are Species & Landscape Conservation, High Altitude Wetland Conservation & management, Climate Change & Climate Adaptation, Sustainable Business & Market Transformation, River Basin and Water Resources Management, Marine and Freshwater Conservation, Sustainable Livelihoods & Governance, GIS & Remote Sensing. These initiatives work across sectors and regions including forestry, fisheries, agriculture and infrastructure in various parts of the country.

What you need:

Required Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
  • An advanced degree in conservation, natural sciences, social sciences, international development or a relevant field;
  • Technical proficiency or experience in the field of conservation, natural-resource management or development;
  • Proven strong negotiating and lobbying skills at the governmental and intergovernmental levels;
  • Experience in engaging with business and industry sectors, to change practices and behaviours;
  • Experience in raising and mobilising funding;
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a complex organisation, with cross-cutting, multi-disciplinary, teams;
  • Ability to manage large, complex and diverse teams;
  • Ability to travel within & outside India, including to WWF-India fields sites; and
  • Excellent command of English (written and oral).
