Assistant Professor - Consultant Ophthalmologist

The Fred Hollows Foundation is working to eradicate avoidable blindness by 2020, and is committed to working with partners to bring about change in eye health systems that is sustainable and reaches even the most vulnerable communities. 
 
The Foundation is currently supporting a range of programs across Eastern Africa to ensure the development and harmonization of human resource initiatives. As part of these initiatives we are working to support the Education and Training of Ophthalmologists in Eritrea. The Fred Hollows Foundation work in partnership with the Asmara College of Health Sciences, School of Nursing, Ophthalmology Department.
 
This position will be responsible for supporting the teaching and clinical activities at Asmara College and Berhan Ayini National Referral Eye Hospital by providing quality training and skilled services to course participants. In addition to this, and in partnership with Ministry of Health, you will use your expertise to support the future development of collaborative, quality and sustainable systems for eye care education in Eritrea.
 
To be successful in this position we are seeking someone who meets the following criteria:
 
• Three years MD residency in ophthalmology from a reputed institution
• Five years of working experience at a busy ophthalmic centre as an ophthalmologist
• Registered with the national medical council for practicing ophthalmology
• Experience working as a trainer for small incision cataract surgery
• Familiarity or training in medical retina or pediatric ophthalmology
• Familiar with working conditions of developing countries
• The ability to obtain the appropriate work visa for Eritrea.
