News and Knowledge (N&K) is the department within BBC Future Media responsible for the following BBC Online products: News, Sport, Weather, Knowledge & Learning, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC Homepage and Search. We manage and develop products for IP broadcast content on websites, mobile devices and interactive TV. We pride ourselves in having a world-leading approach to content management and metadata curation, software development and engineering practices, and rich and immersive audience experiences.
We are looking for an outstanding Development Manager who is excited about exploiting the opportunities presented by new technologies and managing a development team across a number of work streams located in both Salford and Cardiff BBC offices.
Reporting to the Head of Product, you will be a member of the senior management team and a key figure in defining and delivering a suite of audience facing applications and editorial tools for content discovery across all BBC IP delivered content.
The technologies you will work with include java web services, php/zend presentation layers, client side code and responsive design approaches, caching servers and operational monitoring. Proprietary search software is provided by both Autonomy and Exalead and you will work with 3rd parties to procure new solutions and commission bespoke applications when appropriate.
Experience of leading and developing digital media products is essential – including defining technical roadmaps and delivering web and embedded software products direct to consumer. The successful candidate will be leading a team of development staff working to agile delivery methodologies so an understanding and experience in product life-cycle management is key.
This position can be based in either Cardiff or Salford.
