Post-Doctoral Fellow - Resource Economist - Hyderabad, India

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW – RESOURCE ECONOMIST
Hyderabad, India
The person and the job:
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for a young outstanding economist to work as a postdoctoral fellow to study the potential
returns on investment in research and development in the areas of natural resource management, health and ecosystem services.
Working with a team of junior and senior scientists, the incumbent will develop a quantitative understanding of the benefits and costs of investments in research (and the results of research), allowing potential investors to see the ‘bang for the buck’. The research areas are different business models for ‘resource recovery and reuse’ from organic waste and wastewater, and their economic, environmental, health and social implications in low-income countries. The incumbent will use a variety of economic tools and methods along with the assessment of ‘extrapolation domains’ to identify, geographically or within the system or economic boundaries, the out-scaling potential of certain reuse business models or other innovations.
The position will allow the incumbent exceptional opportunities for growth. The selected candidate will be based at IWMI’s office at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Hyderabad, India. The incumbent will report to the Leader of IWMI’s research theme on Water Quality, Health and Environment.
You will:
• possess an understanding of the literature on, and tools used for, the valuation of natural resources, ecosystem services and/or investments in  the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs);
 • conduct economic modeling and stochastic simulation analyses;
 • co-author journal articles to indicate scientific rigor and also disseminate findings through non-technical channels to help promote change; and
 • work within multi-disciplinary teams, including engineers, environmental and agricultural scientists, business modelers and agricultural economists.
You must possess:
• excellent written and spoken English;
 • a PhD or equivalent in resource economics or a closely related discipline;
 • a good knowledge of natural resources, environmental economics and tools;
 • the ability to run integrated modeling approaches such as bio-economic modeling, which combines the biophysical and socioeconomic  aspects of innovations;
 • the ability to use stochastic simulation models for assessing risks associated with return on investment
 • the ability to work in a team with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds;
 • strong analytical skills and a learning attitude;
 • strong written and oral communication skills; and
 • the willingness to travel.
It would be useful if you have:
• knowledge of sanitation issues and waste management; and
 • successfully completed reports, a dissertation or journal articles on the topics outlined above.
This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave and health insurance package. Postdoctoral scientists are appointed on fixed two-year contracts, with the possibility
of a one-year extension.
We will begin reviewing applications after August 11, 2013.
Schedule for the Selection Process
We plan to conduct telephone interviews for short-listed candidates during August, 2013. Selection interviews would then be conducted in Hyderabad, India, or Colombo, Sri Lanka, during September, 2013. Although these dates are subject to change, it would be useful if candidates could be available around these
