Research Manager – Farming and Food , WSPA

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
To manage and develop farm animal research and case studies and develop evidence and information tools for diverse audiences, in support of WSPA’s global, regional and national objectives.
SCOPE OF THE ROLE
  • Line managed by the Acting Head of Farming (International).
  • Works in close association with the Humane and Sustainable Agriculture team (WSPA International).
  • Liaises closely with Programmes, Campaigns and Communications colleagues in WSPA International and other WSPA regional offices where appropriate.
  • Liaises closely with campaign and communications staff across WSPA.
  • Liaises closely with campaign partners on an international scale.
DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • To develop case studies in support of corporate engagement and policy work
  • To develop, design and deliver designated research projects to support WSPA’s policy, farmer and food company engagement
  • Develop relationships and manage collaboration with farmers and farming groups
  • Management of consultants if they are required to the production of research and case studies.
  • Extensive travel to meet, document and interview farmers, producers, processors and food companies as part of evidence building work.
  • To develop effective research-based tools for engagement with farmers, policymakers and corporates
  • To contribute to WSPA’s farm animal strategy development by providing advice and expertise
  • To develop and maintain good relationships with external partners including research bodies, academics, farming groups, NGOs and other relevant individuals or groups and build alliances where needed
  • To represent WSPA in a wide range of environments, including academic, policy, corporate and media
  • To liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders including media, academics, policymakers, food industry and farmers
  • Communicate effectively with diverse audiences via a range of media, including reports, journal articles, press and media copy and video
  • To act as a spokesperson for WSPA in the media or at public events.
  • To liaise with communications, external affairs and fundraising teams to manage projects effectively.
  • To produce project monitoring and evaluation reports as and when required.
  • To manage the research budget and produce regular reports.
  • Work openly and effectively with other team members.
  • Scoping and desk research to select suitable case studies.
  • Develop collaboration with organisations that promote livestock projects, particularly in regions where we currently have limited contacts and capacity, to scope and select suitable case studies.
  • Liaison with WSPA International and regional communications teams to produce effective research tools including reports, briefings and films.
  • Coordination of collaborative activities with farmers and producers in support of regional and international campaigns.
