Senior Manager, Food Quality, Safety and Procurement

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is driven by the vision of a world without malnutrition. GAIN is a Swiss based international organization that mobilizes public-private partnerships and provides financial and technical support to deliver nutritious foods to those people most at risk of malnutrition.  The organization is delivering improved nutrition to an estimated 670 million people in more than 30 countries, half of whom are women and children. 
SENIOR MANAGER, FOOD QUALITY, SAFETY AND PROCUREMENT

GAIN’s Food Quality, Safety and Procurement Unit aims to improve the quality and related compliance of foods consumed by populations in countries with high rates of undernutrition. The Senior Manager will report to the Director of Large-Scale Food Fortification and will strategically manage GAIN’s growing portfolio in food quality, safety and procurement. This includes managing a small, dedicated team, driving implementation of quality assurance and control activities in over 30 countries; designing new quality and safety projects with existing unallocated funds; and mobilizing additional resources for growth in food quality and safety.
Responsibilities 
GAIN Procurement Facility 
•  Drive the supplier approval process for premix as well as other nutrition-related commodities.
•  Establish/ consolidate customer relationship wherever vitamins and minerals are used as fortificants in food fortification programs.
•  Drive sales of premix, MNPs and other nutrition-related commodities.
•  Support improved compliance to applicable premix standards.
Technical Assistance
•  Directly provide quality assurance & control expertise to GAIN Initiative Leads as well as to industry customers and food control authorities.
•  Support the management of GAIN’s grantees in the provision of technical assistance and capacity building in Africa and Asia to the food industry, food control agencies, as well as consumer food groups.
•  Support  GAIN’s  Monitoring, Learning & Research team in development of key studies in quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) and safety and assist in the development of peer review publications.
•  Assist other GAIN initiatives in technical studies and developing approaches to improve quality along the value chain.
•  Ensure efficient collaboration with WFP and other major partners around any quality issues.
Project Management
•  Manage GAIN’s specific quality-related projects including the AIM Quality Improvement Network project and the multi-country QA/QC component of the GAIN-UNICEF Universal Salt Iodization Partnership Project.
Resource Mobilization
•  Conceptualize new investable ideas in improving quality assurance and control, safety, and procurement in the developing world.
•  Develop new proposals for submission to donors, trusts, foundations, the food industry and government. 
Experience 
•  Ten years in food safety and quality, including experience of working with the food industry and/or food control agencies in the developing world.
•  Experience of working in nutrition, food fortification, and/or in global food assistance is a significant advantage
•  Proven technical competence in QA/QC in vitamin technology or related field
•  Familiarity with ISO regulations (FSSC 22000), HACCP, GMP and/or other international standards
•  Supply management
•  Experienced people manager

Education
•  Master’s Degree in food safety, food science or related field.
•  PhD in food science or related field an advantage
Other requirements
•  A willingness and ability to travel (up to 40%).
