Wildlife Energy Conservation Fellow-WECC

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. Position Summary:
NRDC is seeking a Wildlife and Energy Conservation Fellow to work with our Land & Wildlife Program in NRDC's office in Bozeman, Montana. This two-year position (with a possible extension for a third year) will support NRDC's advocacy on behalf of endangered wild places and wildlife, with a focus on the Northern Rockies. In addition to wildlife advocacy, the fellow will spend a portion of their time working on energy issues including replacing dirty energy with cleaner sources and the siting of renewable energy projects and affiliate transmission projects and corridors, with an emphasis on advocating for solutions that will minimize impacts on wildlife in the region while encouraging the responsible development of clean energy. Periodic travel will be required.


Responsibilities:
·Research factual and policy issues relevant to NRDC's wildlife advocacy in the region;
·Engage in the siting and permitting of individual renewable energy projects to achieve the goal of avoiding or minimizing their effects on wildlife and wildlife habitat and encouraging clean energy;
·Coordinate with NRDC's Western Renewable Energy Project staff on siting issues;
·Draft, proofread, and edit documents, including correspondence, position papers, and comment letters related to wildlife advocacy and wildlife-energy issues;
·Advocate with decision-makers, opinion-leaders, and the public; and
·Communications work, including drafting blog posts and speaking with the press.

Qualifications:

Required:
·Undergraduate degree with 3-5 years relevant work experience or advanced degree in wildlife biology, conservation biology, environmental policy, natural resource management or related discipline;
·Outstanding academic record;
·Ability to work in a fast-paced environment on multiple demanding tasks;
·Ability to work both on a team and independently, prioritize multiple projects, and perform well under deadlines;
·Exceptional research, writing and communication skills; and
·Demonstrated commitment to environmental issues and enthusiasm for NRDC's mission.

Preferred:
·Familiarity with wildlife and energy issues and policies in the Northern Rockies;
·Familiarity with state and federal agencies involved with wildlife management;
·Familiarity with state and federal agencies, other stakeholder and conservation-focused organizations, and private sector companies involved with energy projects;
·Knowledge of the ways in which energy projects may impact wildlife and how to avoid, minimize, and mitigate for those effects; and
·Experience with wildlife management policies including Habitat Conservation Plans and Conservation Agreements associated with the Endangered Species Act.
