Research Technician: Analytical Chemist

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and fosters innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic,
laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical
evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services, as well as various
surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms,
the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the
entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Institute for Fruit, Vine and Wine (ARC-Infruitec/Nietvoorbij)
seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions:

Research Technician: Analytical Chemist

Key performance areas: â€¢ Collect and prepare research material • Manage routine analysis
(SO2 determination, pH, TA, Balling, Malolactic fermentation status, sample preparation) of experimental
wines and table grapes during harvest in the cellar • Provide technical support on research projects within
the Post-harvest & Wine Technology Division • Render a consultation/diagnostic service to other divisions
within the Institute • Conduct general maintenance of analytical equipment in the cellar and wine technology
section • Assist with the development of new technologies with standard operating procedures • Interpret
data capturing • Write reports on work activities • Oversee stock control.

Requirements: â€¢ A degree/diploma in Analytical Chemistry • Previous experience in a routine/wine laboratory
• General experience within the research environment • The ability to maintain gas chromatography and gasmass- spectrometer systems HPLC • An understanding of different chemical measurement techniques and
methods • Computer literacy and proficiency in the MS Office suite • Good communication skills (written and
verbal) • A valid Code EB driver’s licence.

A competitive remuneration package will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities and the stature of the
position. Appointments will be subject to a 6-month probation period (for permanent positions only) and a
