Exploration and discovery have been the driving force behind our business for nearly 140 years and the Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) mandate is to grow our value by discovering or acquiring resources that can increase future cash-flows. The objective in RTX is the safe delivery of, on average, one Tier 1 discovery per annum. This is achieved through the effective application of Geoscience techniques and processes, taking account of Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC), economic, commercial and political factors.

We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated individual to join our team in Almaty, Kazakhstan in the capacity of Field Applications Support Officer.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Reporting to the Regional Data & Information Manager, as the Field Applications Support Officer, you will support RTX users in setting up IT infrastructure at remote sites and field camps within the region, to provide ongoing support in the use of these, and to ensure fit-for-purpose applications are available and working effectively to meet the needs of office and field based teams.
The role will also become the primary contact point for the support of RTX technical applications and will be expected to work closely with GBS IS&T and external vendors.

JOB OBJECTIVES

• Support RTX technical applications by dealing with user requests, trouble-shooting issues, liaising with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and IS&T teams, including the IS&T service desk and external vendors.
• Set up and support IT infrastructure and applications for remote RTX sites/camps and provide training for on-site staff to enable them to effectively use equipment and applications.
• Liaise with IS&T, external vendors and service providers to ensure that all equipment required for camp sites are fit-for-purpose before departure and delivered on time.
• Liaise with SMEs and IS&T to update equipment and applications and install new releases of software versions to maintain a current RTX hardware and software inventory which meets IS&T standards and user needs.
• Assist IS&T by coordinating software updates/releases in accordance with the Release Management process, including completing required documentation and associated procedures, authorising Release progress, documenting findings and providing feedback to IS&T on results and issues arising.
• Support the implementation and maintenance of Data Management Plans for exploration projects.
• Monitor volumes of data stored on file shares and assist in assessing the success of data migration to managed systems.
• Monitor application performance, status and health and provide information and reports to IS&T.
• Assist the IS&T and RTX teams in the roll out of new data management systems as required.
• Plan and conduct work in accordance with all HSEC and compliance policies by setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met, and anticipating and managing risks.
• Liaise with regional exploration and support teams to understand user needs regarding IT infrastructure and applications within the region and deliver services which address defined needs.
• Liaise with the relevant teams within IS&T to ensure RTX related queries and issues are prioritised and actioned to meet the needs of exploration teams and users.
• Share knowledge and information with peers in other RTX regions to build a good understanding of regional and global requirements, business responses, processes and services across regions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Relevant qualifications in Geosciences, Earth Sciences and/or IS&T are desirable
• Microsoft Networking qualification advantageous
• Minimum 3 – 5 years working experience
• Experience within the resource/mining sector would be advantageous
• Highly proficient in English and Russian (verbal and written)
• Commitment to safe work practices
• Ability to undertake limited amounts of travel to exploration camps/remote sites.
TECHNICAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES 
• Well-developed technical problem solving skills.
• Ability to engage appropriately with both internal and external stakeholders and to communicate IT issues to technical and non-technical staff.
• A strong customer orientation with the ability to understand various stakeholder needs, manage expectations, negotiate competing demands, and deliver on commitments.
• Proactive and innovative
• The ability to install new equipment and/or applications, working with specialists and users to understand requirements, develop a plan, anticipate and resolve problems.
• Knowledge and experience using Relational Database Management Systems (RDMS) (e.g. ArcGIS, Mapinfo, AcQuire, OassisMontaj, Sharepoint).

This position is based in Central Asia and is a local contract; Kazakhstan, Russia or Uzbekistan Nationals are encouraged to apply.
