The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) relies heavily on in-house specialists on the European Union (EU) to inform the formulation of the UK’s policy towards the EU. If you have broad and deep expertise in the EU, this position provides an excellent opportunity to become one of Whitehall’s leading experts on EU issues.

Your high level of specialist EU expertise will feed into the policy process in a variety of ways. Part of a small, collaborative team, you will provide high-quality specialist policy analysis on a wide range of EU topics, notably on the EU’s historical evolution, its policies and institutions, and its decision-making processes. You will act as the FCO’s corporate memory on EU issues, and underpin EU policy by providing judgements, advice and ideas. You will work very closely with a broad range of policy colleagues, and will maintain strong links with external EU experts, for example in academia and think tanks.

Our successful candidate would most likely have a postgraduate degree with the EU as the main focus of studies along with developed research and analytical skills as this is a specialist position that demands an extensive understanding of the European Union. You will have developed this through an EU-focused education and/or professional experience – ideally a combination of the two. The position also demands sound policy judgement, advanced research and analytical skills, creative and strategic thinking, and an ability to deploy your specialist EU expertise effectively in both speech and writing.
