Deputy Representative to the United Nations

Competitive salary and package New York

We are a campaigning organisation and a big part of our work involves urging governments to accept and enforce international human rights standards. In this role, you’ll help to drive a strategy to protect individuals wherever rights, justice, and freedom are denied.

About the role

You’ll contribute to the development and roll out of our strategies relating to the United Nations and other inter-governmental organisations. Reporting directly to our UN Head of Office, it’s a challenge that extends to everything from communicating across the worldwide Amnesty International movement on lobbying priorities and providing quality advice to colleagues in Amnesty International’s International Secretariat on the use of international bodies, to monitoring developments in our portfolio of issues and driving the realisation of our strategy. Not only does that mean building relationships with diplomatic representatives, NGOs and UN agencies. It also means firing up their enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, our goals. And whether you’re representing us at UN meetings, contributing to project plans or recommending actions, you’ll make our voice heard at the very highest level.

About you

To meet the challenge, you will need considerable experience of working with the United Nations and Non-Government Organisations; experience which has given you a broad-based knowledge of human rights and humanitarian law and a solid understanding of the relationship between international politics and human rights. Strong advocacy skills are clearly essential. As is the ability to make clear decisions and transform creative ideas into practice. Just as important, however, will be your ability to identify opportunities presented by certain situations within the UN, the way in which you build solid relationships with influential figures and represent us externally. And, of course, you’ll be genuinely passionate about making a difference.

About us

Our aim is simple: an end to human rights abuses. Independent, international and influential, we campaign for justice, freedom and truth wherever they’re denied. Already our network of over three million members and supporters is making a difference in 150 countries. And whether we’re applying pressure through powerful research or direct lobbying, mass demonstrations or online campaigning, we’re all inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected and protected by everyone, everywhere.
