Coordinator, Social Compliance and Development - Fairtrade International

We are responsible for the strategic direction of the Fairtrade system, the Fairtrade Standards and support to Fairtrade farmers and workers worldwide.

Short description of main function of the unit

Social Compliance and Development (informal Sector) plays an important role in formulating and carrying out FLO’s strategic agenda with regard to ensuring compliance on Fairtrade relevant standards and empowerment of producers and their communities, with a special focus to issues relating to child labour and other forms of unacceptable labour in the informal employment sectors.

OBJECTIVE/PURPOSE:

The Coordinator will support projects under the Social Compliance and Development (Informal Sectors) arm of Fairtrade work under the overall management and responsibility of the COO and coordinated by Senior Advisor Social Compliance.

PRINCIPAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate, review and analyse country plans and priorities on the social compliance and development aspects of relevant Fairtrade standards, including child labour and child protection;
  • Monitor progress of FLO plan, projects, activities related to social compliance and development (informal sectors);
  • Coordinate with relevant units at FLO and regional Producer Networks, Labelling Initiatives, other partners, constituents and other organizations to expedite implementation and meet targets;
  • Review research papers, coordinate stakeholders input during strategy phase;
  • Provide technical input, organize and support project activities, including research, capacity building and training;
  • Distribute internal and external parties with facts and information on relevant matters as required, produce documents as required;
  • If needed, participate in relevant conferences, seminars, workshops, host training sessions and organize meetings as required - as part of it, provide effective administration and financial management support in line with FLO procedures;
  • Coordinate existing and upcoming partnerships with international NGOs in that specific area on Social Compliance in order to increase our reach on the ground.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Level of education
    • University level education in a relevant field (social sciences international development, human rights, labour relations).
  • Knowledge / Job Specific Competencies
    • 1 to 3 years professional experience working in international development issues;
    • Experience working in an International NGO or business with ILO or other related conventions or codes of conduct for good business practises;
    • Project management and proven capacity to manage, initiate and implement support activities of programs or projects in areas such as research, training and capacity building;
    • Ideally, the candidate has good knowledge of child labour, child protection and gender issues in the agricultural and/or extractive sectors.
  • Professional Skill Requirements
    • Fluency in English is essential, French and/or Spanish highly desirable;
    • Proficiency in German or other languages will be an advantage;
    • Research and analytical skills;
    • Proven reporting/writing/presentation skills;
    • Experience in multi-stakeholder environment desired.
  • Personal Qualities
    • An ability to build and maintain exceptional stakeholder relationships;
    • Able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality;
    • Strong sense of personal motivation and the ability complete all responsibilities with minimum supervision;
    • Diplomacy and patience essential;
    • Collaborative and supportive approach to teamwork;
    • Positive attitude and determination to move projects forward within a complex and challenging operating environment;
    • Computer literate to intermediate/advanced level in Word, Excell, Access and PowerPoint.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

  • This is a full-time position;
  • An initial one-year contract is offered. It is envisaged that the contract will be renewable after the initial one year period;
  • Location is at Fairtrade International offices in Bonn, Germany;
  • The office language is English;
  • Salary as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement Salary Level V for the Wholesale and Foreign Trade Industries for North Rhine Westphalia and Fairtrade International Company Agreement on wages and salaries plus an attractive benefit package;
  • Starting date as soon as possible;
  • 30 days of holidays per year.
