Researcher – WATER MANAGEMENT AND INSTITUTIONS Cairo, Egypt

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks a scientist who is practiced in the analysis of social and physical interaction of water processes. If you have at least 3 years’ post-PhD experience conducting systemic analyses of irrigated agriculture and/or river basin management and can use approaches that combine the technical understanding of water management and farming systems with consideration of institutional or policy dimensions), then you fit our profile perfectly. Your research portfolio will be to conduct original research on water management and institutions, mostly in the Nile Delta in Egypt. You will be based at the IWMI office located at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Cairo, Egypt. You will report to the Principal Researcher based in the Cairo office.
As a Researcher, you will:

contribute to research projects on irrigated agriculture, water management and institutions, predominantly in the Nile Delta, in both old lands and new lands, including fieldwork and data analysis;
write reports and articles for journals and other appropriate audiences;
contribute to a six-country regional project on groundwater governance;
contribute ideas and assist in bibliographical searches to develop new research ideas related to water and agriculture in the Middle East, for example, on river basin management, or assessment of policy processes and governance;
co-design concept notes and related research projects and contribute to those projects when implemented;
supervise Master’s students involved in specific field research; and
contribute to IWMI’s overall research program.

You will possess:

a PhD or equivalent experience related to the analysis of water management and its social/policy dimensions;
at least three years’ post-PhD experience;
experience of conducting systemic analyses of irrigated agriculture and/or river basin management using approaches that combine technical understanding of water management and farming systems, with consideration of institutional or policy dimensions;
ability to carry out syntheses and incorporate theoretical frameworks in research;
demonstrated ability to speak and write excellent English;
track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals;
sensitivity to, and interest in, social and institutional dimensions of water resources management;
computer literacy, with skills in handling and quality controlling hydrological and water management data;
ability to articulate quantitative and qualitative analyses;
ability to establish priorities, plan, organize and monitor own work in an interdisciplinary and multiple task environment;
strong communication and interpersonal skills;
ability to maintain effective working relationships in a multicultural, multiethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity; and
ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, with local and international partners.

It would be useful if you also had:

previous working experience in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region;

spoken Arabic (this would be a major asset);
skills in geographic information systems (GIS) and relevant computer software; and
knowledge on institutional analysis or agrarian change.

This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
