Senior Researcher – Hydrology and Water Resources Accra, Ghana

If you have at least 10 years’ experience in agriculture and water resources management with a PhD in hydrology, water resources management or a related discipline, you may be the person that the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for to fill the position of Senior Researcher - Hydrology and Water Resources. You will develop a research portfolio on hydrological processes and water resources management at landscape and basin levels, and provide leadership and strategic direction for similar research activities in West Africa. The position holder will be based at IWMI’s West Africa Office in Accra, Ghana, and will report to the Theme Leader for the Institute’s research theme on ‘Water Availability and Access’.

You will:

conduct research to build an understanding across a range of issues, related to hydrology, water resources modeling and environmental flows;
provide leadership in conceptual and empirical research related to improving water resources management in West Africa across a range of scales, and under existing and possible future conditions including those resulting from climate change;
identify new research trends and niches, and develop new research proposals for projects addressing important hydrology and water management issues in West Africa;
initiate, develop and sustain collaboration with research partners, governments and donors in West Africa and elsewhere in Africa, as well as in Europe, Asia and the USA;
contribute to relevant research portfolios of the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (CRP5) and Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), particularly in relation to water resources management systems and decision-making under climate variability and climate change; and
prepare research reports, journal articles and other scientific manuscripts (e.g., policy guidelines, policy briefs, etc.) for dissemination and uptake of research results.

You will possess:

a PhD in hydrology, water resources management or a related discipline;
at least 10 years of experience in agriculture, water resources management and interactions between agriculture, water resources and environment in Africa and/or Asia;
experience in diverse hydrological and water resources analyses models, tools and techniques and their applications in the context of Agricultural water management;
at least 10 years’ experience of developing and leading research teams with multiple partners and multiple disciplines from both advanced research institutes and developing countries;
ability to conduct fieldwork and overall ability to work in data-scarce environments;
proven ability to develop fundable research proposals;
proven ability to analyze hydrological and meteorological data;
proven ability to use and interpret outputs from hydrological and water resource models;
proven ability to write and publish research findings;
proven ability to work in multicultural teams; and
excellent oral and written communication skills in English and a working knowledge of French.

It would be useful if you also had:

project management experience;
ability to effectively establish priorities, plan, organize and monitor own work in a multiple-task environment;
understanding of the principles of climate change modeling and the integration of climate change scenarios into hydrological and water resource models;
understanding of ecological principles, the concept of ecosystem services and links to water resources management; and
general understanding and use of geographic information systems (GIS) and other spatial data software used for hydrological purposes.


This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
