THE GLOBAL CANOPY PROGRAMME

The Global Canopy Programme is a growing and dynamic tropical forest think-tank based in Oxford, acting through our global networks of experts in science, policy, business, finance and forest communities. We gather their tropical forest intelligence to spark insight, convene research and design projects that can help leverage future large-scale systemic change. We demonstrate the value of forests as natural capital and communicate it to the world.

THE ROLE

The Global Canopy Programme is seeking a Project Manager for its Community MRV project in Guyana. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a pioneering forest NGO that is looking to grow its work on community forest monitoring in relation to emerging policies such as REDD+. Forest communities are at the front line of efforts to conserve forests and the GCP is developing monitoring tools that can help communities to benefit from REDD+ while safeguarding their rights, resources and livelihoods.

Working closely with GCP’s Research, Policy, and Comms & Digital teams as well as local implementing partners and stakeholders in Guyana, including the Makushi Amerindian community, Iwokrama International Centre and the Government, you will play a key role in guiding and implementing the day to day activities of the Community MRV project. Our aim is to build capacity in the North Rupununi region for community monitors to map forest change, ecosystem services, and wellbeing in community titled lands.

Since the project is linked to the development of the Government of Guyana’s national MRV system, you will also assist our local partners in sharing project findings with Government agencies, thereby helping to ensure that the project leaves a lasting legacy not only for the communities involved but also as part of Guyana’s low carbon development strategy.

You will also assist GCP in collaborating with Google Earth Outreach and a group of international NGOs to develop and test open source software systems for collecting, storing and sharing locally-gathered data using smartphones. Guyana is one of a handful of global case studies from which we intend to share best practice monitoring protocols for community forest monitoring related to payments for ecosystem services, including REDD+.

You will need to have strong project management skills and experience of working in a tropical forest/savannah region, in daily contact with local communities, together with an understanding of participatory and community-based mapping and monitoring. Your ability to strengthen existing and build new collaborations with practitioners, researchers and technology providers will be vital to ensuring the future continuation of this important stream of work for the GCP. The job will be based in Guyana and Oxford, UK.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• MONITORING DESIGN – Work together with the project team, consultants and stakeholders to further develop and test a monitoring framework that meets both community and Government stakeholder requirements.

• TRAINING – Train project staff and community monitors in mapping, monitoring and technology, e.g. GIS.

• DATA STORAGE & VISUALISATION – Work with the Comms & Digital team as well as technology providers to develop robust and secure means for storing and visualising data using open source online tools.

• COMMUNITY MAPPING – Support the project partners, including the CMRV Management Team based at Bina Hill Training Institute, in producing community maps that form the basis for ongoing monitoring work.

• STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT – Work with the Guyanese project partners to ensure appropriate engagement of local and national stakeholders, including village councils, National Toshaos Council and Government agencies (involved in REDD+).

• PROJECT BUDGET MANAGEMENT – Ensure project delivers outputs on budget against tight deadlines. Work closely with financial officers in GCP and local project team to keep track of project finances.

• COORDINATION OF CONSULTANTS – Engage and manage consultants such as forest carbon specialists and other specialists to provide input as required and within limited budgets.

• DONOR REPORTING/FUNDRAISING – Work with GCP’s finance and fundraising staff to write regular donor updates and reports as well as seek new funds to enable the project to develop.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Masters-level education or equivalent experience in environment and/or development.

• Proficiency in GIS and open source mapping/monitoring tools.

• Knowledge of climate change, forests and REDD+ from science, policy and community perspectives.

• Minimum 1-2 years of experience of managing projects involving forest communities and host-country partners and governments.

• Experience of working in Guyana or Latin America an advantage.

• Languages an advantage, especially Portuguese, Spanish and French.

QUALITIES

• Organised approach to work independently to achieve specific targets, under own initiative.

• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

• Confidence and sensitivity to engage with Guyanese colleagues, partners and stakeholders.

• Ability to manage projects both remotely from Oxford and effectively in the field
