Economics Department (ECON) – Country and Financial Sector Analysis Division (1 CNTRY & FIN. ANALYS)

The Economics Department (ECON) provides high level economic analysis and studies to support the Bank in its operations and in the definition of its global positioning, strategy and policy, reporting jointly to the Directors General of Ops A and Ops B.

The Economics Department works with a matrix structure, which means that the three Heads of Division coordinate projects on topics of their own competence, with resources which might be allocated to the Department’s other Divisions.

The successful candidate will contribute to economic work supporting operations, operational policy formulation and strategic decision-making in areas of critical importance for the achievement of EIB objectives.

S/he will report to the Head of the Country and Financial Sector Analysis Division, and work on country and financial sector analysis related topics, but also, on policy as well as economic studies.

Accountabilities

Under the supervision of the Head of Division, the successful candidate will:

  • Assess risk, by contributing with in depth economic analysis of countries and financial sectors, under the region of own responsibility;
  • Analyse the viability of projects in the financial sector, as per regional responsibility; participate in the definition of local currency pricing and in the identification of proper financial value added and assist in the process of monitoring and result assessment;
  • Prepare economic and financial analysis on topics of critical importance to the EIB and impacting operational strategies and policies;
  • Participate in the drafting of reports for senior management and general use;
  • Propose improvements of processes, procedures, methodologies and working methods;
  • Provide intelligible information on economic and financial issues to stimulate the institutional debate (e.g. input for speeches, answer to specific questions, etc.);
  • Participate in the design and organisation of roundtable, conferences, seminars and events and support the dissemination of information inside and outside the bank.

Qualifications

  • University level education in Economics or Finance at Master’s or, preferably, at PhD level;
  • 3 years practical experience in a well recognised Research Institution (university, research centre, or and international financial institution), of gained during the PhD studies;
  • Knowledge of a broad range of relevant economic specialities (Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Finance, Development economics, Policy related topics);
  • Good knowledge of standard applied quantitative methods;
  • Strong computer skills in particular with regard to statistical/econometric software;
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French and a working knowledge of the other. Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage.
