Job Description

We are looking for a Grants Officer to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory - European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in the UK. 

The principal responsibilities of the Grants Officer will be to manage applications, awards and research grants and contracts at EMBL-EBI, working closely with group and team leaders and other colleagues at EMBL-EBI and EMBL in Heidelberg. The post holder will work in a small, busy team of five and report directly to the Grants Office Supervisor.

The Grants Officer will be responsible for providing advice to group and team leaders on the administrative and financial requirements laid down by different funding bodies. The post holder will provide cost estimates for grant applications and ensure that all administrative stages are completed to deadline. 

The post holder will look after the administration of current grants, liaising with the EMBL Budget Office on the preparation of expenditure statements to funding bodies and with the professional advisors on legal IPR issues. S/he will maintain database records for reporting to senior management and advising fund holders on the utilisation of funds including the preparation of regular financial reports. 

The successful candidate will also be responsible for disseminating information on funding opportunities via the internal web site to group and team leaders. S/he will be expected to represent EMBL-EBI at meetings with funding bodies and attend conferences or workshops as required.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must have a proven ability to analyse complex information and figures. Experience in the administration of research grants and contracts is desirable, however full training will be provided.
The ability to work independently and with a high degree of accuracy is required for this post as well as the capacity to prioritise a heavy workload and meet tight deadlines. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate well developed analytical and problem solving skills.
A high level of competence with PC Windows packages including Office (Word, Excel) is essential. Experience of working with SAP or other similar database packages is desirable.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with internal colleagues in a stimulating international environment.
