Position Overview:
Operating on a 16 days on, 12 days off roster commuting from Cairns, you will work as part of a multicultural team on this exciting international project. Barrick Porgera is based in the Highlands of Enga Province in Papua New Guinea and offers a unique and challenging work environment. At an elevation in excess of 2100 meters the Porgera Valley has a year round temperate climate with an annual rainfall of approximately 3.6 meters. The 2500 strong workforce is extremely diverse both culturally and in regards to education, skill and experience.
The opportunity exists for you to relocate to Cairns and enjoy a relaxed lifestyle in a modern and dynamic city offering excellent educational facilities up to university level. Alternatively and subject to conditions, the company will subsidise on-travel airfares paid to commute to and from Cairns for each work roster.
The position
Reporting to the Open Pit Manager you will be responsible for the achievement of the open pit short and medium term mine plan through the application and monitoring of production systems.
In this role you will develop project proposals for submission to the Open Pit Manager (OPM), coordinate, manage and provide regular reports on the projects progress against daily reviews of progress against plan within area of accountability to achieve completion to agreed quality, budget and schedule.
This means ensuring there is integrated activity and communication between all functions within and supporting open pit mining activities; and the delivery of ore and grade is on schedule to the Processing Department, contributing to the development of the 13-week mine plan as per schedule.
In addition you will develop the 2-weekly open pit mine plan in conjunction with the Senior Open Pit Engineer, for approval by the Open Pit Manager (OPM) and will also assist the OPM with improvement related project tasks and change management initiatives and other projects by collecting and analysing information to assess overall performance statistics, statutory requirements, systems efficiencies, equipment utilisation, operating costs and other measures for business improvement initiatives.
The person
The ideal applicant will have recognised experience and exposure within a large scale mine. Proven experience in hands on team leadership is essential for this role, as are well developed communication skills and the ability to liaise at all levels. Working towards or have the ability to obtain PNG Metalliferous Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency; Significant open pit production experience in metalliferous mining operations and current knowledge of open pit mining technology and heavy production equipment including haulage dispatch systems, experience in drill and blast QA\QC systems, and the ability to develop continuous improvement production systems of work.
Must have a high level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry in PNG along with demonstrated experience in managing department costs, budgeting and application of continuous improvement ideas;
You will also need several years of demonstrated success as an effective and supportive leader with proven ability to lead a team safely and improve team safety awareness through effective communication (written/spoken and presentation) skills across all levels.
Having competent computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, spreadsheet applications, word processing and presentation is also essential. As the successful candidate you will need to demonstrate the ability to diagnose problems and potential problems by thinking outside the square (box) and providing alternatives. And you must be able to manage performance of team members promptly and fairly, maintaining or enhancing others’ self esteem and providing support without taking away responsibility.
