Markle Foundation Director/Staff Economist

Job Description
The position will provide an opportunity for engagement in research and strategy activities related to Markle’s new Economic Security initiative. Reporting to the Senior Director, and working in collaboration with the Chief of Research, the duties will include:
  • Conducting research on a wide range of topics related to technology, economics, labor trends, and international trade;
  • Consulting on substantive economics issues as well strategic policy considerations;
  • Preparing research reports, white papers, policy briefs and other communication materials for internal and external audiences;
  • Preparing research, talking points, presentations for speaking engagements for self and other staff on the Markle team;
  • Fact checking all materials prepared in connection with this initiative;
  • Managing and overseeing research with collaborators, contractors and research partners which may include: academic institutions, think tanks, private industry, and government;
  • Supervising 1-2 staff which may include a research intern or other junior level staff person who will support research and analysis;
  • Potentially, staffing one or more task force work groups;
  • Providing staff and outside collaborators with leadership in seeking input, finding solutions and building relationships necessary to advance the work;
  • Being a public representative of the Foundation’s economic security work as a speaker and presenter at conferences and other events, and contribute to outreach and communications efforts in conjunction with efforts that may be DC-focused;
  • Drafting blog entries and other communications for the Markle website;
  • Being accountable for timely and high-quality completion of assigned projects; and
  • Undertaking other projects as assigned. 

Desired Skills & Experience
Candidate for this position must have a graduate degree in economics or related field with a demonstrated interest in at least one of the following areas: technology, labor markets, international trade and experience in the private sector. Applicant must have excellent research skills and analytic capabilities, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to capture complex issues in accessible documents for varied audiences. Must be able to work independently and as part of a collaborative, fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
