Technology Transfer Officer - Natural Sciences


TEC Edmonton, a joint venture between the University of Alberta and Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC), is looking for a capable individual to join its Natural Sciences and Engineering Technology Transfer Team. Reporting to the Manager of the team, the Technology Transfer Officer will assist with the evaluation, protection, and commercialization of early-stage technologies in the natural sciences and engineering disciplines. Responsibilities
  • Conducting patent and market research on technologies and inventions related to natural sciences and engineering
  • Determining intellectual property protection strategies and coordinating patent filings with researchers and patent agents
  • Collaborating with colleagues to determine appropriate commercialization strategy: spin-off versus licensing
  • Formulating marketing strategies and marketing the technologies to potential licensees
  • Drafting and negotiating various commercialization agreements, including confidentiality agreements, license/option agreements and agreements relating to spin-off opportunities
  • Drafting and negotiating material transfer agreements
  • Helping develop strong relationships with the research community and educating the researchers on intellectual property matters
 Qualifications
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Science or Engineering; MBA and/or business experience preferred
  • Experience in the technology commercialization sector
  • Research experience preferred
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team atmosphere
In accordance with the Sessional and Other Temporary Staff agreement, this level 2 position has an initial term of one year, with the possibility of renewal, and offers a comprehensive benefits package and annual salary commensurate with education and experience.
