Department

BBC London is one of the most watched TV news programmes in the UK, with audiences for our flagship 6.30pm programme regularly topping a million. There is always the wide range of big issues to tackle - home affairs, security, health and education. We have built a reputation for uncovering important stories ahead of the national media, with a dedicated investigations team supporting our daily output. In such a culturally rich and diverse city, our programme also constantly looks for new ways to reflect how London is changing as well as the arts and entertainment stories you would expect in the UK’s capital city. We are based in New Broadcasting House (NBH), the new home of BBC News in London.

Role

6 month fixed term contract / attachment

We are looking for an Assistant Editor to produce our main 6.30 programmes and be part of the management team running a department of 80 people. We need someone with excellent journalistic judgement who can deal with the difficult and challenging editorial agenda; first class programme-making and gallery outputting skills; and a leader who can inspire a team of journalists, camera crews and technical staff.

Requirements

This contract/attachment coincides with a period of great change with our programme moving into new studios and the newsroom moving to the same edit and transmission systems as the rest of TV news in NBH. An ability to lead a team through change and work collaboratively with other parts of the BBC will also be essential for this role.

BBC London has been a multi-platform newsroom for more than a decade. An understanding of this and how we can increasingly use social media to reach new audiences and enrich our output will also be important.
