The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an, independent, international organisation supported by 34 countries. Established in 1975, ECMWF has been at the forefront of global weather prediction for over thirty years.  Its operational activities and wide-ranging research and development programmes continue to play a leading role in the advancement of data assimilation and weather forecasting systems.
Following the decision to re-structure the organisation to create four instead of three departments, ECMWF is now looking to recruit a Director of Forecasts to join their senior leadership team. As Director of Forecasts you will play an instrumental role in the growth and development of our world-leading products and services. You will ensure that our primary output - numerical weather forecasts - is of the highest quality and meets the needs of our stakeholders, users and customers.
The Role:
  • Define, develop and deliver the organisation’s strategy relating to forecast data including; access policy, charging regimes and data service provision.
  • Provide meteorological expertise, ensuring that the forecasts are provided in a timely manner and are of the highest quality, maintaining our world-leading position.
  • Establish strong relationships with the users of ECMWF’s forecasts, the members of the ECMWF Council and other advisory committees.
The Person:
  • A collegiate individual with a strong meteorological background. You will have a thorough understanding of meteorology and numerical weather predication; including forecasting and data assimilation techniques.
  • A strong leader with a demonstrable customer-centric approach and a proven ability to identify, prioritise and deliver user-driven requirements in a complex, international scientific environment.
  • A person of standing and rigorous intellect, you will be able to gain credibility quickly with a diverse range of senior stakeholders.
