ECMWF Head of Communications
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an, independent, international organisation supported by 34 countries. Established in 1975, ECMWF has been at the forefront of global weather prediction for over thirty years. Its operational activities and wide-ranging research and development programmes continue to play a leading role in the advancement of data assimilation and weather forecasting systems.
ECMWF’s principal objectives are the development of numerical methods for medium-range, monthly and seasonal weather forecasting; the preparation, on a regular basis, of these weather forecasts for distribution to the meteorological services of the Member States; scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts; and the collection and storage of appropriate meteorological data. Satellite and in situ observations provide the information for up-to-date global analyses and reanalyses of the atmosphere, ocean and surface.
Within this newly created position, the Head of Communications will be responsible for helping ECMWF inform and engage the stakeholder community about the issues and activities of the Centre and for facilitating good communications between ECMWF and the community it serves.
The Role:
- To design, develop and implement an integrated communications strategy and function for ECMWF, ensuring a more focussed, proactive and cohesive approach to external and internal communications.
- To develop the centre’s communications content both printed and online ensuring that is structured and delivered in a manner best suited to the message, the audience and the chosen communications channel.
- To deliver and professionally run ECMWF’s Council and Committee meetings, its printed output, event planning and logistics and knowledge repository.
The Person:
- Educated to degree standard ideally with a post graduate qualification with significant professional communications experience both strategic and tactical. International experience would be highly beneficial to success in this role as would experience having been gained in a political sensitive environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for success in this role as are the ability to build relationships and influence at all levels both internally and externally.
- Strong management and leadership skills are essential and experience of building a new communications function would be beneficial. Strong experience of motivating and inspiring staff to work together to achieve a common objective are a prerequisite.
