ABOUT ACCORD

The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) is a South African-based civil society institution working throughout Africa to bring creative African solutions to the challenges posed by conflict on the continent. ACCORD's primary aim is to influence political developments by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict. ACCORD specialises in conflict management, analysis and prevention and intervenes in conflicts through mediation, negotiation, training, and research and conflict analysis.

OVERALL PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE

The Great Lakes Project being implemented by ACCORD in collaboration with the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict  Secretariat (GPPAC) and the Nairobi Peace Initiative (NPI-Africa) seeks to contribute to the consolidation of peace in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, through the encouragement of locally-owned initiatives and utilising regional approaches to conflict management and peacebuilding. Against this background, the Project's initiatives are designed to build a broader culture of peace in the Great Lakes Region by providing a platform for the regional organisation (ICGLR), government and nongovernmental stakeholders to engage in collaborative peacebuilding activities.

WORK RELATIONS

The Coordinator of the Great Lakes Project (GLP) is expected to lead the coordination and implementation of all initiatives in the Great Lakes Project. Reporting to the Manager of the Interventions Department, the Coordinator – GLP collaborates with ACCORD programme staff, including the Peacemaking, Peacekeeping, Peacebuilding, Training Units, the Burundi and South Sudan Country Programmes staff, as well as the Knowledge Production Department. The Coordinator - GLP will operatefrom Burundi, and will engage  with the aforementioned internal stakeholders as well as external stakeholders.

LOCATION

Bujumbura, Burundi (covering Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda).

DUTIES

  • Leading the coordination of the operational design and planning for the Great Lakes Project, which includes the Burundi Country Programme as well as projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda;
  • Coordinating the outputs and supporting the implementation of the Project Plan and budget;
  • Overseeing the administrative aspects of the role towards and implementing the strategic objectives of the Great Lakes Project;
  • Ensuring that the Great Lakes Project's activities remain relevant, effective and in sync with the organisational goal;
  • Engaging in project monitoring and evaluation as well as coordinating the preparation and submission of internal and external reports;
  • Developing proposals and concept notes towards enhancing and supporting the Great Lakes Project;
  • Assisting and co-organising project related activities with project and regional partners, including partner meetings, trainings and inter-regional exchanges;
  • Overseeing the development, dissemination and implementation of curricula,  training and research materials generated by the project; and
  • Support learning and knowledge generation in relation to the Great Lakes Project.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Masters degree in any of the following fields: Conflict Resolution/Management, Peace Studies, Development Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Project Management etc.;
  • At least 5-7 years operational and programme management experience in an NGO environment, with at least 2-3 years in a conflict setting in Africa, preferably in the Great Lakes region;
  • Substantive knowledge of peace and security issues in Africa (particularly in the Great Lakes Region), accompanied by the requisite political sensitivity;
  • Ability to execute project activities and to integrate policy, practice and research towards fostering sustainable peace in the continent;
  • Sound financial management experience to provide budgetary oversight for the Project;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including fluency in English and French; and
  • Strong organizational, facilitation and training skills Independence, flexibility, capacity and aptitude to work in a cross cultural environment.

CONDITIONS

A contract for three years (2013-2016).
