The Faculty is consistently rated among the best in Canada in terms of research, teaching and community involvement. According to the 2013 Financial Times business school rankings, the Alberta School of Business is among the top 100 business schools worldwide; in research output, it ranks 9th globally among publicly funded institutions and 33rd overall; in PhD programs, it ranks 35th and in MBA programs 56th, among publicly funded institutions globally. The university seeks an innovative leader and strategic global thinker with a strong international focus to continue to build momentum for the School. The Dean is responsible to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) for the supervision and administration of all operations of the Faculty, including budget and fund development. The Dean leads the School’s curricular initiatives, research and scholarship, professional training, strategic planning, recruitment, and global outreach. Additionally, as a member of Deans’ Council, the Dean is one of 18 senior administrators of the university.
While the Dean may come from within a business school or research institute, the business or financial communities, the public sector, or government agencies, he or she must demonstrate a strong understanding of the culture of a research-intensive academic environment. An earned doctorate or terminal degree is strongly preferred, however, substantive experience and expertise in other listed areas of qualification would also be considered. Records of outstanding administrative leadership and success in external relations, fundraising, and in building and maintaining relationships at various levels are considered critical for the Dean’s success. The Dean will have a proven record of commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and innovation in fields related to business. The Dean must possess highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire and engage faculty, staff, students and external communities in advancing the Alberta School of Business.
