UNC-CH Energy Services is responsible for the provision and operation of utilities (steam cogeneration, chilled water, electric utilities, water, wastewater and stormwater) that serve the University campus.
Cogeneration Systems primary purpose is the generation and distribution of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instruments, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. This system is the most complex and technically advanced facility of its kind within the University of North Carolina System.
The ideal candidate for this position will have registration as a North Carolina Professional Engineer. Candidate will also have a working knowledge of applicable standards, codes, regulations, practices and other requirements for Cogeneration Facility Systems. As least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in electrical engineering, preferably in power plant operation and maintenance. Desirable qualifications include experience or specific knowledge of distributive control systems (DCS-Ovation), boiler controls, medium voltage switchgear, generators, unit protective relaying, instrumentation, preventive maintenance programs and project management. Experience with the controls of circulating fluidized bed boilers (CFB), process (boiler) tuning and plant start up experience will also be beneficial. Ideal candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with employees and contractors and be proficient in the use of computers in daily work.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some position may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. This position is considered an Emergency Duty position and must report to work during periods of adverse weather or other University emergency.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements: The environmental conditions vary tremendously from air conditioning and heat to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions for various lengths of time depending on the operational requirements. This position could be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE in accordance with established procedures. Examples: climb ladders/stairs, ability to move 50+ pounds, ability to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus.
