The post holder will act as HR Business Partner for Forest Research and Silvan House (Shared Services) with a 60/40 split in duties.
 
The post holder will be expected to work out of Forest Research based in Roslin near Edinburgh and Silvan House, Corstorphine.  Roslin and Corstorphine are around 10 miles apart.
Background Information
The Forestry Commission (FC) reports to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on England and GB issues, Scottish Ministers on Scottish issues and Welsh Ministers on Welsh issues.

The FC leads the way in encouraging a strong forestry industry in Britain based not just on commercial success, but on a much wider appreciation of the many values that people attach to the nation’s forests and woodlands.  Broadly, the FC is concerned with the formation and management of national forests, the encouragement of forestry on private estates, research development, and education. Multi-purpose use is an important aspect of forestry policy. The emphasis has widened from encouraging timber production to the provision of social and environmental benefits arising from planting and managing attractive, as well as, productive woodlands.
Background on Forest Research
Forest Research is the Forestry Commission's Research Agency and is the UK's foremost body for forest and tree related research.
It's aim is to support and enhance the role of trees, woodlands and forests in sustainable development, by providing high-quality research, development and knowledge transfer.
It's objectives are to;
To provide robust science to inform the development and delivery of UK Government and devolved administration forest policies.
To provide innovative applied research, development and monitoring services to UK, European and international forestry stakeholders.
To transfer research knowledge directly, or in partnership with others, to UK and international audiences.
Background on Silvan House
The Forestry Commission's shared services are based in Silvan House, Corstorphine.  Employing around 250 people, they provide the following services;
- Finance and Accounting Services
- Information Services
- Human Resources
- Corporate and Forestry Support
- Inventory, Forecasting and Operational Support and
- Internal Audit
Each of these central departments provides services to FC England, FC Scotland and FC Wales.
Purpose of the Job

This is a key role within Forestry Commission and Forest Research.  As an HR professional, you will work as part of the FC and FR teams to optimise the performance and impact of their areas and steer HR strategy and strategy implementation.
Key Work Areas

Advise the Forest Research Management Board and work with the rest of the senior team to set the strategic direction for FR with regard to people issues. Ensure linkage with the FC GB People Strategy and proactively drive the workforce planning and Equality and Diversity agendas.
Act as a member of the HR Management Board, contributing to HR strategy and ensuring that Forest Research’s views are considered where appropriate.
Lead a small team of HR professionals, supporting them to increase managerial and organisational capability in HR issues.
Advise on the HR implications of new policy developments and business directions and take responsibility for developing and implementing HR solutions in order to support the delivery of business objectives and / or business change programmes.
Provide expert, strategic HR advice to Shared Service departments in Silvan House.
Actively support and advise FR and Shared Services colleagues through business change.

Build relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders the wider Forestry Commission and central HR ensuring that others are aware of the key issues.

This post will involve regular travel including to remote areas therefore applicants need to hold and continue to hold, a full current driving licence that enables them to drive in the UK and should be willing to stay away from home overnight.  The Forestry Commission is willing to consider any proposals put forward by applicants which would allow them to do the job by other means.
