About ACCORD The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) is a South African-based civil society institution working throughout Africa to bring creative African solutions to the challenges posed by conflict on the continent. ACCORD’s primary aim is to influence political developments by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict. ACCORD specialises in conflict management, analysis and prevention and intervenes in conflicts through mediation, negotiation, training, and research and conflict analysis.
Senior Programme Officer, Interventions Department Reference: ID-SPO-ACCORD
Overall programme objective: ACCORD’ Interventions Department seeks to contribute to the promotion and consolidation of peace in Africa . Currently the ACCORD’s Interventions Department comprises of four Units, namely: Peacemaking, Peacekeeping, Peacebuilding and Training Unit. Additionally, the Interventions Department also comprises of two country programmes, namely the Burundi Country Programme and the South Sudan Initiative (SSI). More recently, ACCORD’s Interventions Department has been working towards launching the Great Lakes Project. . Work relations Reporting to the Manager: Interventions Department, the Senior Programme Officer: Interventions collaborates with other staff in the Interventions Department, including staff in the Peacemaking, Peacekeeping, Peacebuilding, andTraining Units. Additionally, the SPO: Interventions Department liaises with staff working on ACCORD’s country programmes and the Knowledge Production Department. The SPO: Interventions operates from Durban, South Africa while engaging with the various programmes being undertaken by the different Units in the Interventions Department.
Duties • Providing support towards the operational design and planning for programmes in the Interventions Department; • Providing administrative and technical support towards implementing the strategic objectives of the Interventions Department, ensuring quality and sustainability of projects; • Ensures the creation and updating of information and knowledge emerging from the implementation of Interventions Department project, paying attention to ‘good practices” and lessons learned; • Assisting the Manager, Interventions Department in preparing, revieiwing and submitting internal and donor reports (narrative as well as financial reports); • Assisting the Manager, Interventions Department in developing and revieiwing proposals and concept notes towards enhancing and supporting the programmes in the Interventions Department; • Assessing implications of new policy developments and strategies on programme implementation, and providing recommendations towards effective implementation; • Supporting the monitoring and evaluation of specific Unit programmes within the Interventions Department; • Assisting and co-organising project related activities to the Interventions Department
Requirements • A Masters degree in any of the following fields: Conflict Resolution/Management, Peace Studies, Development Studies, Security Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Project Management; • At least 3 years experience in programme administration and implementation, with at least 1-2 years in an NGO setting in Africa • Substantive knowledge of peace and security issues in Africa, which is accompanied by the requisite political sensitivity; • Ability to execute project activities and to integrate policy, practice and research towards fostering sustainable peace in the continent • Experience in maintaining administrative and financial systems • Strong written and oral communication skills, • Fluency English is a must, while competency French in an added advantage • Attention to detail, ability to plan and prioritise work, strong capacity to meet deadlines and to successfully deliver towards a diversity of objectives and work demands.
Conditions • This is a permanent contract, subject to the availability of funds.
